It would seem that what could be simpler than placing a camera trap in the chosen place and enjoying the results of its work. And indeed, there is nothing complicated, but by neglecting the basic rules for installing a camera trap, inexperienced users, and what to hide, and experienced photo hunters, do not get the result they expected. As a result - false positives, overexposed and/or blurry pictures, empty frames, missed moments, wasted time searching for solutions to these problems, thousands of angry words typed on thematic forums, tens of minutes of desperate conversations with the seller, friend, colleague, mother-in-law, dog and awareness of the complete futility of existence. In order not to run into this bouquet of unpleasant moments, sometimes it is enough to follow the simplest rules.
- The camera trap must be mounted on a hard, static surface. Currently, these cameras do not have any kind of image stabilization to compensate for the camera's own angular movements and prevent image blur. In principle, it is not needed there, based on the specifics of the equipment itself, which is not designed for shooting in motion.
- Outdoors or indoors, there should be no heat source in front of the camera trap. Based on the principle of operation of the installed PIR sensor, which responds to the difference in the potential of infrared radiation from the environment and a moving object, the camera must be installed outdoors in the direction of the sun, and indoors away from radiators or heaters. It is for this reason that it is undesirable for there to be any swaying objects (branches or grass) in front of the camera trap, which can heat up from the sun and in turn lead to so-called “false positives”.
- Also, an important factor influencing the correct operation of the camera trap and obtaining clear images is the correctly set sensitivity level of the PIR sensor. For the cold season, sensitivity should be minimal, and for the warm season, on the contrary, it should be maximum.
- Based on the viewing angle of the camera optics, the distance from the installation site to the intended photographic object must also be appropriate. You shouldn’t expect clear shots from a wide-angle camera at a distance of more than 5-7 meters, or vice versa - a camera with a standard viewing angle will not take a sharp photo at a distance of 2 meters. Currently, only one camera from BolyMedia, with a viewing angle of 110 degrees, is capable of capturing images with sharpness across the entire field of view.
Following these simple rules will sometimes help you avoid poor-quality photographs and save time and nerves.
