Features of yogi nutrition: effectiveness of the technique, sample menu for the week. Healthy nutrition during yoga practice Food for yogis

Nutrition during yoga- a completely unique system of relationship between a person and food. For many centuries, Indian sages honed their original method of physical and mental training, while nutrition principles for yogis harmoniously integrated into the overall picture as a clearly calculated part of the whole.

From the position yoga healthy eating- is not the same as it is for a European. Diet selection is not carried out taking into account the content of vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in products. In any case, this factor is not the key one.

Yoga: basic nutrition rules

At the center of such a concept as “yogi nutrition” is the concept of prana. Prana is psychic energy extracted from almost any product, provided it is properly prepared. Essentially, prana is the result of the interaction between a person and a product. If prepared skillfully, even a spoiled product will not harm a person.

Certainly, food for yogis does not imply the use of all products indiscriminately. On the contrary: yoga involves eating exclusively fresh food. The cooking process is of utmost importance. According to yoga, cooking correctly means cooking in a state of special energy fullness. The most important point in the yogi diet is meditation while cooking.

Closely related to this is the well-known yoga nutrition principles, which requires chewing food thoroughly. Thus, it is important not only WHAT, but HOW yogis eat. They chew for a long time. In accordance with their nutritional system, they need to chew food at least 40 times so that it turns from solid to liquid. This allows you to extract the maximum amount of living energy from products. You should also drink, as if chewing the liquid, in small sips. Yoga- this is not only special supply system, but also a special drinking regimen. So, it is recommended to drink one hour before and one hour after meals. Compliance with this rule is important, because with this method of drinking, gastric juice is not diluted, and food is better digested. According to yoga recommendations, you should drink no more than 10 glasses of water per day.

Yogi Nutrition Principles

The first principle of yogi nutrition: the usefulness of a dish depends not only on the choice of products and their quality, but also on a person’s internal energy. A huge role is played by the state of a person at the time of cooking and how he takes this food.

Yogi nutrition system- this is a multi-step upward path, more reminiscent of a steep staircase, the ascent of which becomes more and more difficult with each new step. As the yogi develops, he should gradually switch to energy nutrition. Perfect yoga nutrition- draw handfuls of cosmic energy and consume a minimum amount of coarse material food.

The second principle of yogi nutrition: food must be sufficient. In other words, you need to eat little, and only the essentials. the main objective diets for yogis- reducing foods in the diet to the most useful and necessary. A person following the yoga nutrition system should eat only if he feels hungry. If you are not hungry, you can safely skip meals. Popular recommendations about diet do not work here. According to yoga, it is better to eat food two to three times a day, and the portions should be small. The last meal is two hours before bedtime. The best time to have breakfast is two hours after waking up. Once a week you should have a fasting day and drink only water (2-2.5 liters)

Third yogi nutrition principle- lacto-vegetarianism. In accordance with yogi diet menu includes only plant and dairy products. Eating meat is not allowed for many reasons. First of all, Hindu philosophy presupposes non-harm to all living things. Another reason for giving up meat: from the position of yoga, animal products are harmful to the human body. This statement applies to almost all products of animal origin, with the exception of dairy products and bee products.

It should be noted that the arguments of modern vegetarians completely repeat the principles of nutrition of yogis:

  • Meat is toxic because at the moment of killing it “imprints the memory of horror” (this is the most powerful argument).
  • The animal eats anything, including pesticides. Meanwhile, purity of consciousness requires purity of the body.
  • Meat food causes rotting processes in the intestines, and this poisons the body.
  • Meat processed by the body leaves behind purine bases, against which the “guardian” of our body, the liver, is powerless. It is purines that make a person aggressive and angry.
  • Eating meat is associated with human sexual function: it matures early and disappears quickly. Meat eaters are coarser, more brutal, “lower”.
  • People who eat meat age faster than vegetarians.

According to yogis, our body is not adapted to process meat food, since humans are originally herbivores. To be convinced of this, just look at your own teeth: these are not fangs, like those of predators. They are designed for processing plant foods. However, the main arguments in favor of its yogi nutrition systems is the fact that vegetables, fruits, cereals, milk and dairy products are quite enough for good nutrition. Therefore, there is absolutely no need to kill living beings and poison one’s own body with meat.

To conclude the topic, it should be noted that yogis are tolerant of the habits of Europeans and their established food traditions. While acknowledging that many of these habits are quite harmful, they also remind us that changing lifestyles is not easy and will take time. When switching to a vegetarian diet, there will certainly be a transition period.

How do yogis eat?

Fats. All fats of animal origin are harmful to the body. This is due to the cholesterol content in them, the high level of which leads to the formation of cholesterol plaques, narrowing of the lumen of blood vessels and the development of cardiovascular diseases. You can only consume vegetable oils: olive, sunflower, peanut, sesame - everything except palm oil.

Sugar. Yoga nutrition system does not include the consumption of sugar and anything produced with its addition. Honey, dried fruits, fruits and berries with a sweet taste are useful. As for sugar in its pure form, it increases the risk of various diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and coronary heart disease. This is why yogis refuse this product.

Any person has the opportunity to independently verify whether sugar is a natural food for his body and whether our body needs it. To do this, you need to drink coffee and tea without sweetening for several days. A week later, try drinking the same drinks in a sweet form - you won’t like them at all.

Salt. Yogis show the same categorical attitude towards salt. It is better to avoid it altogether or (as a last resort) consume it in minimal quantities.

Garlic. This product is also not particularly loved by supporters of the Indian teaching. Garlic can be consumed only when necessary, as an ingredient in alcohol tinctures (for example, for bronchitis, various colds).

Stimulating drinks and food. These include alcohol, coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, condensed milk. The attitude of yogis towards the listed products is also negative. All of them produce a doping effect that is not suitable for people who prefer to work with world energies. Besides, they are simply unhealthy. By consuming such foods and drinks, people think that they are increasing their energy. In fact, they artificially induce a state of excitement, after which a natural decline in strength occurs. It should be noted that Western medicine is not so categorical regarding these products - especially when it comes to coffee. A number of new scientific studies give scientists reason to believe that this popular drink has a positive effect on blood vessels and the heart.

Yeast. Traditional Indian bread is baked without using yeast. These are thin flatbreads made from wholemeal flour. Yoga nutrition rules prescribe the avoidance of yeast, since it causes fermentation processes in the intestines and other undesirable consequences. In the countries of the European region it is quite difficult to adhere to such dietary rules, but it is quite possible to replace white bread with rye bread, made from wholemeal flour, without yeast. In addition, it is very important to exclude from the diet pies, cakes, and flour products that use yeast in their preparation.

Yoga: diet

In accordance with principles of yoga, diet should be based on fruits, vegetables, dried fruits, legumes, cereals. You can eat millet, buckwheat, oatmeal or just a handful of grains.

It is important to chew food thoroughly. When preparing it, cooking should be minimal.

A very significant role yogi nutrition system gives milk, which is considered an absolutely necessary component of the diet, the so-called “sattva product”, giving a person inner peace, harmony, allowing him to feel unity with the flows of cosmic energy.

In ancient India, around the year 200 AD, there lived a healer known as Charok, who was appointed to the court of King Kanich Ka and studied the nutrition of yogis. He compiled a scientific work called Charaka Samhita, which is a very extensive, comprehensive treatise on the causes and treatment of diseases. Even in times when food was abundant and could be collected and consumed fresh without the loss of vitamins associated with modern trade processes, he emphasized the importance of a good diet to maintain a healthy body and a well-balanced mind. Here is the literal statement of this sage:

You should consume food in moderation, depending on your individual digestive abilities and the strength of your individual digestive fire.

Types of yogi nutrition

Charok classified the components of the diet into heavy and light. He attributed the properties of air and heat to light components, and the properties of soil and the moon to heavy components. Consequently, he emphasized that most of the diet should consist of light ingredients due to their ability to increase the “digestive fire”, i.e. foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole rice, fresh milk, cheese and butter.

He argued that heavy meals consisting of meat, fish, eggs, poultry, wine, etc. should be taken in moderation because they can be harmful if eaten to the point of feeling full.

In his instructions, he emphasized that proper nutrition for yogis could contribute to health, strength and longevity. It is interesting to note, from the point of view of modern application, in the yogi's eating liquid diet, fruits and vegetable juices, that this sage said the following: “Liquid nutrition relieves hunger, thirst, fatigue, weakness, stomach disease”.

Naturally, those who are interested in the lifestyle of a yogi want to know what the yogi eats. First of all, he is a vegetarian and his diet consists mainly of raw and cooked vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts, rice and fresh milk, as well as vegetable oil and ghee, ghee being clarified butter. He also uses unleavened bread, baked from unsifted flour made from wheat grown on virgin soil. The flour is kneaded into a dough, which is cut into small flat cakes before baking.

Yogi nutrition menu

We have a lot to learn from how a yogi relates to his food needs. Modern dietary science emphasizes the need to consume at least a small amount of raw foods, since of all foods, raw foods provide the nutrition that most revitalizes and renews our body. The fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains we consume contain all the vitamins, amino acids and proteins that are not subject to destruction by heat treatment and, therefore, are available for direct absorption to replenish the body's costs. Beautiful and tasty salads and vinaigrettes can be prepared from the sweet, aromatic leaves of green vegetables, combined with natural, bright and pleasing colors. You can mix beets, carrots, tomatoes, a variety of juicy herbs - for example, watercress, curly parsley, radishes, onions.

Three or four such products with simple seasoning, a small grated fresh ear, a few raisins, etc., eaten with a small amount of nuts or pressed cottage cheese, are a surprisingly tasty food.

As for hot dishes, there are as many of them as our imagination can imagine. There are many varieties of legumes: soybean, mang bean, lima bean, navy bean, garbanzo bean, etc., which when cooked with a little onion and perhaps and garlic with a pinch of herbs, such as marjoram, sweet basil, thyme can be very aromatic and fragrant, it would be nice to remember that a beautiful plate, attractive with its appearance and color, already gives rise to the movement of digestive juices, and this prepares us to receive pleasure from eating yogis and good digestion. In many countries around the world, whole bean grains prepared using the proposed technology are used as a significant part of the main diet of yogis. For those who feel the need for meat, it is suggested to consume it in relatively small portions and only with foods that do not contain starch. In other words, avoid bread, cakes, pastries, sweet pies, ice cream, pasta, spaghetti and instead eat green vegetables, tomatoes and other non-starchy vegetables with some fresh fruit for dessert. To prepare yogi food, use stainless steel, clay (ceramic) or baked glass utensils, or even old-fashioned cast iron.

Kundalini yoga- a direction of yoga with an emphasis on breathing exercises and meditation. The lessons involve both static and dynamic work with the body, medium intensity physical activity and a lot of meditative practices. Prepare for hard work and regular practice: most kriyas and meditations need to be performed for 40 days daily. Such classes will be of interest to those who have already taken their first steps in yoga and love to meditate.

Will help you: strengthen body muscles, relax, cheer up, relieve stress, lose weight.

Suitable for you: kundalini yoga video lessons with Alexey Merkulov, kundalini yoga classes with Alexey Vladovsky.

Yoga Nidra- practice of deep relaxation, yogic sleep. It is a long meditation in the corpse pose under the guidance of an instructor. It has no medical contraindications and is suitable even for beginners.
Will help you: relax, relieve stress, discover yoga.

Bikram yoga is a set of 28 exercises that are performed by students in a room heated to 38 degrees. By constantly maintaining a high temperature, sweating increases, toxins are removed from the body faster, and the muscles become more flexible. This style of yoga focuses only on the fitness component and leaves aside spiritual practices.

Try also:

Aeroyoga- Aerial yoga, or, as it is also called, “yoga on hammocks,” is one of the most modern types of yoga, which allows you to perform asanas in the air. Aerial yoga is performed in a specially equipped room in which small hammocks are suspended from the ceiling. It is in them that asanas are performed. This type of yoga makes it possible to quickly master some complex asanas, and also promises good physical activity, develops flexibility and strength.

Hatha yoga- one of the most common types of practice; many original styles of yoga are based on it. Suitable for both beginners and experienced practitioners. Hatha yoga lessons help you master basic asanas and simple meditations. Typically, classes are conducted at a leisurely pace and involve predominantly static load.

Will help you: get acquainted with yoga, lose weight, strengthen muscles, relieve stress, cheer up.

Suitable for you: hatha yoga video lessons, couples yoga classes.

Ashtanga yoga- Ashtanga, which literally means “the eight-step path to the final goal,” is one of the complex styles of yoga. This direction combines different practices and represents an endless flow in which one exercise smoothly transitions into another. Each asana should be held for several breathing cycles. Ashtanga yoga will require strength and endurance from its adherents.

Yoga Iyengar- This direction of yoga is named after its founder, who created an entire health complex designed for students of any age and level of training. It was Iyengar yoga that first allowed the use of auxiliary devices (rollers, belts) in classes, which made it easier for beginners to perform many asanas. The purpose of this style of yoga is to promote health. Much attention is paid to the correct performance of asanas, which are considered the basis for mental and physical recovery.

It’s not enough to choose food wisely, you also need to eat it wisely. An old, wise doctor once said: “Always remember that the stomach has no teeth.” Use the “tool” that your body has and chew your food thoroughly. In this case, the yogi's food consumption decreases, digestion improves, and in general it is beneficial for the yogi.

From the same point of view, it is good to note that products grown on organic matter are much more useful for building body cells than those grown on depleted soil. Such depleted soil cannot provide valuable qualities to the crops growing on it. To return missing minerals to the soil and give plants what they need to fully feed them, you should use properly prepared fertilizers. Then the plants, in turn, will be able to provide humans with the necessary elements in the form of yogi food. Well-prepared soil not only ensures plants grow properly, but also eliminates the need for toxic insect repellents and spraying. When provided with the necessary nutrients, plants, like people, radiate health. In addition, products grown organically have significantly improved aromatic properties and are stored much better.

Since many books and tables provide a selection of information based on the minerals and vitamins contained in food, this short article does not attempt to provide detailed information regarding the assessment of various aspects of food. Moreover, this is a treatise on health, not disease. By eating a well-balanced diet, we will give our body the opportunity to receive from natural foods everything it needs for a healthy, energetic, active life.

The Importance of Nutrition for Yoga

Food represents entertainment and pleasure, as well as building and replenishing material. To get the most benefit from our food, it should be taken in an atmosphere of peace and harmony and never when you are overtired, angry or upset. It is better to refrain from eating than to eat when you are in a hurry or anxious. A glass of fruit or vegetable juice is much better than hastily swallowed, unchewed food.

It is even important what your posture is while eating. In India, people sit cross-legged on the ground, this is called the "happy pose." It is not practiced in the West, but you should sit so that your body feels good support on the chair; you should not sit heavily on the chair, sitting on its edge, or lean on the table.

Keep your meals simple. Do not use too many mixtures at meals, even from good products. Prepare food so that it is attractive. Allow enough time for food in order to fully experience the pleasure. Follow these few, simple rules - and you will achieve that feeling of well-being that will allow you to live more than exist.

Daily diet in yoga nutrition

Approximate daily diet (adjustments are possible depending on individual needs).

  • Breakfast
    A large thicket of your favorite fresh fruit of one type.
    In summer - a cup of mint or chamomile or any other herbal infusion, at your request, with lemon or honey.
    In winter - according to the rise: juice of one lemon per large glass of warm water. Breakfast, at least half an hour later, can consist of a small dish of good organically grown whole grains, some cream and honey with one or two slices of wheat bread, butter - if desired, a few figs, dates or apricots and a cup of whole grain coffee or herbal tea;
  • Lunch
    A rich vinaigrette of three or four types of vegetables with a small amount of pressed cottage cheese or shelled nuts, fresh fruit. Daily variety will keep you interested in food.
  • Dinner
    A large baked potato or tasty whole grains, a side dish of carrots, beets or fresh green peas, also a side dish of green beans or green tops of any vegetable, and the cooking time should be as short as possible so that the vegetables acquire a soft, delicate taste. Those who need meat can replace it with baked potatoes. This simple but satisfying meal can be completed with whole grain coffee or delicious herbal tea.

It is worth experimenting for a few weeks with a diet similar to the one described. Only in very rare cases will there be no significant improvement in energy and vitality.

It's no secret that success in yoga practice depends on proper nutrition. But there are, perhaps, even more different diets than styles of modern yoga. How to understand all this diversity? We have selected some general tips from Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of health. Some of them are quite well-known and logical, others may surprise us. Ayurveda, of course, is not the ultimate truth, but a holistic system that has been tested for thousands of years, so it can be trusted.

The fundamental principle of proper nutrition according to Ayurveda: even the best foods can be useful at one time of day, and very harmful at another. Secondly, there are also special recommendations for nutrition in the cold and hot seasons: food for winter and food for summer. The third important point: some products are incompatible, and even consumed in season and at the “appropriate” time of day, can cause an imbalance in the body. We will tell you about the last, “secret”, fourth rule at the end.

Three gunas (qualities of material nature) in Ayurveda, and three types of food:
1) Sattva (“purity”) - freshly prepared and light vegetarian food: seeds, nuts (except peanuts) and sprouted grains, most fruits (especially coconut and banana), wheat, milk, butter, honey, unrefined sugar;
2) Rajas (“passion”, “activity”) - stimulating foods: citrus fruits, coffee, tea and chocolate, foods rich in spices, eggs, fresh fish and seafood, beer and wine, carbonated drinks, onions and garlic, chili;
3) Tamas (“ignorance”, “darkness”, “death”) - heavy, slagging food that makes you sleepy: root vegetables, red meat (beef and pork), canned food, mushrooms, food with a heavy taste (roach, etc.) .p.) as well as any frozen food (semi-finished products), or stale food (especially overnight food), as well as reheated food (including “secondary” boiling water), food with chemical additives; strong alcohol; Any food from a restaurant or ready-made salads from a store is also considered tamasic.

Breakfast

Morning (from dawn to noon) is the time of day when it is better to take only the so-called “sattvic”, i.e. "pure" or "noble" food. This includes fruits such as bananas (and coconuts, or coconut juice), sweet raisins, pears - but in no case citrus fruits. In the morning, it is better to refrain from coffee and strong tea - put off the “doping” until lunchtime, when the body’s energy begins to dry up. Nuts are great for breakfast, especially pine nuts and almonds, as well as seeds (but the seeds need to be lightly toasted before eating). It is useful to eat nuts mixed with dried fruits: dried apricots, dates, dried figs and sweet, large raisins are especially useful. Any nuts, except pine nuts, should be lightly fried and ground into a paste (or crushed in a blender) before use. Groundnuts are generally considered undesirable - they are heavy, so-called. “tamasic” food (by the way, the same as watermelon or melon). It is very useful to eat natural, “live” yogurt or fresh buttermilk in the morning (both are easy to prepare at home). If you eat sweets containing sugar, it is better to eat them at breakfast and then abstain: eating sweets at night is especially harmful.

Dinner

From noon to 3 p.m. is lunch time. The daily meal should not be heavy: although the power of the sun helps to digest food, the blood already loses its strength and thickens. Therefore, it is good to consume foods that contain a lot of liquid: first of all, all fruits and juices.
You should not consume canned, reconstituted juices and fruits that have been “ripened” under artificial conditions: they will do more harm than good. It’s better to buy fruits from the former “fraternal republics” at the market than “plastic” ones (Spain, Israel, China, etc.) in a fashionable supermarket: there’s nothing useful left in them anyway (or maybe there wasn’t). Natural, non-chemically processed dried fruits, by the way, are also easier to find at the market (usually the driest and most unattractive in appearance) or in a special health food store than to buy in a hypermarket.
If you drink tea or coffee, add green cardamom and a pinch of ginger to neutralize the harm, and eat the drink with roasted nuts. For lunch, it’s good to cook boiled (or even better, steamed) rice, ideally white - “basmati” (brown varieties are harder to digest). It is very useful to eat wheat for lunch: best of all, sprouted and lightly fried, or whole grain flatbread without yeast, or whole grain bread. Avoid white yeast bread - it gives you fullness, but not health. A boiled mixture of white rice and dal (a legume, sold in oriental goods stores) is very healthy. Water with lemon is good as a drink - it improves digestion. During the day, especially if the room is hot, you can also drink water with honey at room temperature - it restores the lack of fluid and improves digestion.

Dinner

It is advisable to have dinner before 6 p.m., but if this is not possible, at least do not overload your stomach. The power of digestion after sunset is very weak. For dinner, it is healthy to eat: vegetable soups, steamed vegetables, boiled/stewed beans and beans, as well as greens. Avoid eating root vegetables (potatoes, etc.), citrus fruits (oranges, lemons), as well as rice, nuts and seeds for dinner. It is very harmful to eat animal fats (meat, fish, seafood) in the evening - if you eat food that is considered extremely heavy in Ayurveda, it is better to do it in the afternoon. In the evening, do not eat spicy (minimum spices!) and fried foods, and completely abstain from vegetable oil (vegetables can be stewed in water or with ghee - melted cow butter). Light food for the evening - “grandmother’s recipe”: boiled buckwheat with milk. And if you feel hungry late in the evening, you can drink a glass of warm milk (first bring to a boil and cool to a pleasant temperature), to which you can add a little ghee; but don't drink hot milk at night.

Food for winter

Winter is a period when you should eat foods that have a warming effect. Hot dishes made from vegetables, such as potatoes, tomatoes, turnips, carrots, spinach, greens, pumpkin, zucchini, will help restore internal warmth. If you do not adhere to a strict sattvic diet, eat onions and garlic occasionally; One clove of garlic is enough. In winter, in general, you should eat less citrus fruits (they keep you cool) and dairy products (except for cheese). Nuts will help generate internal heat: fresh pine nuts, which can be consumed whole, or roasted and crushed almonds, cashews, walnuts, pistachios into paste - they are best eaten together with raisins (they should always be soaked for a day or at least overnight). Avoid drinks with ice. It’s good to add chopped ginger, a few black peppercorns, and fenugreek seeds to black long tea - this drink warms you up perfectly.

Incompatible products

According to Ayurveda, milk is incompatible with vegetable oil, salt, yogurt and of course lemon. Never mix food at different temperatures into one meal (cold salad with a main hot dish, hot coffee or chocolate with ice cream, etc.). Food goes very poorly with tea or coffee; it is better to drink these drinks at least half an hour before or after a meal, or better yet, an hour and a half. Honey cannot be heated above 70° C, it turns into poison: thus, tea or hot milk cannot be combined with honey; melted honey is not healthy; cold-pressed honey is better.

Pray then eat

“Secret” Ayurvedic rule: it is important not only what and when to eat, but also HOW. Before and after eating, it is useful to wash your hands (and, if possible, feet), rinse your face with water - this creates a “clean space” necessary for eating. Always eat in a pleasant environment, the kitchen is clean and tidy, and no news on TV! At the table, before starting to eat, it is good to “meditate”: mentally tune in to enjoy the food, feel the inner gratitude of the Universe for this wonderful food (believers do this in the form of prayer). It is better not to talk while eating in order to get maximum energy from conscious chewing and eating food, but after it it is very useful to chat and laugh: it improves digestion. After eating there should be a feeling of joy and lightness.

Ancient Tibetan monks compared the human body to a temple. Everything should happen in inextricable connection with nature. This is what the continuous development and improvement of people is aimed at. To cleanse your body, you should know what you can eat before or after yoga. Effective daily practice invariably concerns the question of how to eat properly. This is why the basics of healthy eating are so important for new yogis.

When is the best time for the body to relax and absorb food? What can you eat after training and what should a gentle diet be like? What does a typical yogi menu consist of and why would ancient monks have successfully used soda? It's time to deal with the most important issues, without which the practice of the ancient teachings cannot be done.

What can you eat while doing yoga or how to eat healthy?

Tibetan monks tell their contemporaries that the practice of yoga cannot do without a sufficient amount of nutrients. Therefore, the menu should be as varied as possible. This opens up wide possibilities for creating a menu, because the diet will not be so annoying and “harsh”. Moreover, if you don’t like any product, you can confidently replace it for a while with more familiar food. Yoga is a fairly flexible culture.

However, yoga practitioners are well aware of the many restrictions that apply all the time.

The main message that yogis give is: “We can eat foods that clear the mind, bring pleasure and benefit, give lightness and satisfaction.” Yogis consider everything else simply “garbage” that pollutes the thoughts and body.

The practice of yoga does not imply any strict restrictions. An individual diet can be recommended for each person. However, an indispensable piece of advice for yoga practitioners is to eat a vegetarian diet, and for effective cleansing you can occasionally use baking soda.

Why is a vegetarian diet necessary?

Plant foods give you more energy

Experienced yogis mostly eat vegetarian food, not only after training, but also as a main diet. This diet is due to a number of factors:

  1. Passion for vegetarianism leads to a slowdown in the aging process;
  2. The body's endurance increases for a long time;
  3. Plant-based foods are much easier to digest;
  4. This diet eliminates the formation of toxins and significantly reduces the risk of poisoning;
  5. Yogis especially value the property of vegetarianism to clarify consciousness and influence the spiritual forces of the body;
  6. An animal menu obtained by violence (caught fish, killed animal) saturates with much less energy than plant foods.

Food and yoga teachings

The teachings of yoga teach us how to eat properly, according to which the world’s creation is subject to three basic qualities: passion, darkness and grace. Constantly consumed food should carry precisely grace, which determines our level of happiness, contentment and humility. After “ignorant” food, it is more difficult to cleanse the body, and we remain depressed and sick. Such food is invariably of poor quality. It may be poorly prepared or simply stale. Its companions are considered to be artificial additives and ingredients foreign to the body. This is the kind of food that is not recommended to eat if you want to be happy spiritually and physically.

Diet plan for yoga classes

The main task when practicing yoga is to eat in such a way as to correctly distribute the balance of incoming energy and expended energy.

In fact, when consumed in moderation, you can eat a wide variety of foods. What is more important is how long after you eat. Tibetan monks invariably eat at intervals of several hours. After doing yoga, you should wait at least 40-60 minutes. This is necessary for the body to relax after tense asanas. It is also important to normalize the emotional sphere.

When doing yoga in the morning, you can eat some high-calorie foods and fruits and drink half a glass of water. The ideal solution would be a fresh banana or some grapes. Avoid overfilling your stomach! More intense hatha yoga exercises involve significant stress. You shouldn't eat at all before a strenuous workout. But afterwards they advise drinking clean water, and an hour later they replenish energy with carbohydrate-containing light foods.

Do you do more “measured” kundalini or kriya yoga? Then you can also eat moderately before visiting an instructor or doing home exercises. It would be right to eat a little, because you should not practice asanas on a completely empty stomach, so as not to cause exhaustion.

The main task when practicing yoga is to eat in such a way as to correctly distribute the balance of incoming energy and expended effort, effort and achieved results!

Using baking soda on your own, especially internally, is not only useless, but also dangerous to health.

To feel lightness, peace and unity with nature, you need to eat right. However, many believe that soda can be used to quickly cleanse the physical component and mental structures. It is not eaten, unlike food. However, the prepared solutions “help” rejuvenate the body from the inside, washing away blackness and dirt of various origins, like plaque from kitchen utensils. At the same time, there are even widespread methods for how long after training it should be used.

Having an alkaline environment, soda can only be used as solutions for rinsing the mouth or in gastroenterology. Light solutions of soda have a beneficial effect on the body with confirmed increased acidity of the stomach or a tendency to gastritis. Due to its alkaline nature, it is used strictly in a hospital setting to restore the normal acid-base balance of the blood.

It is worth noting that baking soda should be used very carefully and only on the recommendation of doctors. Even for the purpose of rinsing, it is not a panacea. It has been proven that herbal remedies are much more effective. And soda only makes the mucous membrane loose, stimulating the penetration of pathogenic microflora into its deep structures.

This is why soda should not be taken for “cleansing” after or before any asanas. It is much better to normalize your sleep-wake schedule, provide your body with regular exercise, master stress-resistance techniques, and eat nutritious foods. This is how you will safely and effectively cleanse your body. Using soda on your own, especially internally, is not only useless, but also dangerous to your health.

A healthy lifestyle and the principles of proper nutrition are now practiced by many people. Every fitness center offers group yoga classes, and these workouts are widely popular. Yoga classes tighten the body, improve stretching and promote weight loss.

But true yoga is a whole philosophy, a special life position. Only by immersing yourself in teaching can you achieve harmony with yourself and the world around you, and improve your body and spirit. Nutrition during yoga plays an important role in self-improvement and health.

Rules and principles of nutrition for yogis

Eastern teachings are based on Ayurvedic theses; there is no place for heavy food and negative thoughts. The philosophy says that a person needs food to maintain physical and mental activity. The basis of a yogi’s diet should consist of natural products, mainly of plant origin. The nutritional rules can be briefly described as follows:

  1. Every product eaten should benefit the body. The serving size should be such as to charge a person with energy until the next meal.
  2. The basis of a yoga diet should be plant foods: cereals, raw nuts, fruits and vegetables. The menu should include dairy products and ghee. At least 60% of plant products should be consumed raw, and only a smaller portion should be thermally processed.
  3. Meat is a difficult product to digest, and if possible, it is better to avoid it altogether. But if you feel the need for meat, it is allowed to be consumed, but in rare cases and in the first half of the day.
  4. A full stomach will have an unpleasant effect when performing asanas, so it is not recommended to eat less than 2-3 hours before classes.
  5. The teaching calls for thanking a higher power for any food eaten. To ensure that dishes are charged with positive energy, dedicated yogis chant special mantras. For the average person, simply preparing food in a good mood is enough. Only in this way will food give the body creative energy and fill it with vitality.
  6. The volume of a single serving should be such that after consumption you are left with a feeling of slight malnutrition. Yogis advise filling the stomach halfway with food, leaving room for water and gases formed during the digestion process. The feeling of fullness will come 10-15 minutes after finishing the meal. If your stomach is 100% full of food, there is a high probability of a feeling of heaviness due to poor digestion of lunch. A person becomes lazy, instead of getting a boost of energy, he gets stomach problems and a desire to sleep.
  7. The optimal number of meals is from 2 to 4 during the day. You should only eat when you are clearly hungry.
  8. It is necessary to drink water, the approximate volume is 2.5 liters of liquid per day. The basics remain the same: don't drink water immediately after eating. The liquid should enter the body 30 minutes before meals or 1-2 hours after.

Yogi food should be simple and processed only when necessary. Even porridge is advised not to cook until cooked, but to pour boiling water until it swells. From the moment of steaming to consumption, at least 2-3 hours should pass; you can leave the cereal until the morning, then drain the water.

Chewing food repeatedly is one of the main rules of nutrition in yoga. Before swallowing food, you should chew it about 40 times. In this case, the digestion process starts in the oral cavity, then it is easier for enzymes to break down the raw materials until the nutrients are completely absorbed, and the person will feel lightness in the body and a surge of strength.

Forbidden food

The principles of nutrition according to the philosophy of yoga imply eating foods that are “clean” from an energy point of view. This means that every piece eaten should benefit the body. Based on this, the following foods should be excluded from the diet:

  1. Meat, especially red varieties. It is believed that the meat is initially filled with negativity, as it was taken from a killed animal. Also, meat fibers take a long time and are not completely digested; the remains cause putrefactive processes in the intestines and poison the body with toxins. If completely giving up meat is unacceptable to you, eat fish and poultry as an alternative.
  2. Baking with yeast. Such products are poorly digestible: yeast microorganisms suppress normal intestinal flora, cause increased gas formation, heaviness in the abdomen and stool disorders. Decaying undigested food residues in the intestines lead to general intoxication and sluggish health.
  3. Sweets, confectionery. Synthesized sugar and all sweet gastronomic delights are solid carbohydrates that are instantly absorbed into the blood. The high calorie content contributes to excess weight gain; these carbohydrates are difficult to burn even with heavy physical activity. Sweets only clog the body without having any beneficial properties.
  4. Fried, fatty foods that take a long time and are difficult to digest. The process of frying in oil “rewards” food with carcinogens and additional calories. The notorious appetizing crust is especially dangerous. Excess fat is also converted into cholesterol, which clogs blood vessels and causes a number of serious diseases.
  5. Salty and spicy dishes. Salt and spices are not prohibited in Ayurveda, but they should be used rationally and in small quantities. And although you can add a pinch of spices and salt to a salad or soup, then you cannot eat all winter preparations or vegetables in Korean.
  6. Alcohol. An absolute poison for the body, it is completely prohibited in the diet of yogis.
  7. Ready semi-finished products.
  8. Coffee, which is considered a strong stimulant.
  9. Products with preservatives, dyes and other synthetic “chemicals”: ketchup, mayonnaise, canned food, chips, sausage, etc. All products in this series inhibit the gastrointestinal tract, slow down metabolism, and lead to obesity and diseases of internal organs. If you want to diversify your menu, there are many recipes for natural sauces and appetizers.

All food that has been frozen is undesirable for consumption. Positive energy is carried only by high-quality fresh products without signs of rotting or spoilage. It is not advisable to heat food; the use of a microwave oven is absolutely prohibited. And, of course, don’t try to force yourself to eat foods that you clearly don’t like: look for an alternative or combine them with other ingredients so that the consumption process brings pleasure.

Nutrition for yoga: list of products

Let's move on to the main question: what do yogis eat and what are the benefits of Ayurvedic nutrition? To begin with, all food should be joyful and satisfying. Naturally, each product carries its own load, and you need to know how to organically combine them.

The list of useful products includes:

  • Unprocessed whole grain cereals;
  • Sprouted wheat;
  • Legumes;
  • Vegetables, preferably raw;
  • Seasonal fruits, not treated with chemicals;
  • Milk and fermented milk products, unsalted cheese and cottage cheese, ghee;
  • Melons;
  • Dried fruits and honey.

Products rich in vegetable protein can easily replace meat in terms of energy content and satiety. Sometimes you are allowed to eat eggs, fish and white meat if your body persistently requires these foods. Ayurveda recommends avoiding mushrooms, as they, like a sponge, absorb negative information and pollution from the environment.

Eat vegetables raw whenever possible. If heat treatment is required, do not overcook them, or better yet, bake them in the oven. It is important that the body easily copes with digestion without discomfort. When choosing fruits, give preference to local varieties. As practice shows, domestic fruits contain several times less pesticides and chemicals, which impart a marketable appearance and improve transportability to overseas “delicacies.” Before consumption, fruits should be thoroughly washed to remove contamination and possible surface treatment with chemicals.

Be sure to drink clean water and herbal teas between meals.

Yoga nutrition for weight loss

To lose weight, you need to get rid of the psychological need for food. Make sure that you only need food to get energy. Yes, it’s quite difficult to adapt to a new diet, but no one forces you to do it radically at once. Yoga philosophy allows for a gradual transition to the right, healthy foods. Nutrition yoga is a kind of training of the spirit in parallel with improving physical fitness. To lose weight while doing yoga, you should pay attention to the right combination of foods.

The breakdown of energy components - proteins, fats and carbohydrates - occurs with the help of various enzymes. If you choose the wrong “duet”, instead of feeling good and cheerful, you can end up with indigestion and a bad state for the whole day. Eating some foods together is appropriate, but others are not. So, let’s take a closer look at how to harmoniously build your menu:

  • Protein products are ideally combined with vegetables;
  • Cereals are consumed alone or with low-starch vegetables;
  • Fruits can be mixed with each other, but they must be eaten separately.

Fruits are digested the fastest: the process is completed in 30-60 minutes, while vegetables break down a little longer. It is useful to eat fruits in the morning, when the body is still full of strength, since there has been no energy expenditure yet. But you can include fruits in the evening menu.

Any grains are a source of healthy carbohydrates; they provide energy for several hours. Grains are digested within 2-3 hours, after which an increase in capacity is observed. It is recommended to consume cereals and cereals in the first half of the day.

Protein foods take the longest to digest; it takes more than 3 hours to break down protein molecules. The best and only correct time to consume protein is lunch.

Yogi diet: diet for a week

For breakfast you can eat dried fruits, a handful of nuts, and dairy products. In the morning, sprouted grains are useful, honey is allowed. Immediately after waking up, drink a glass of water, you can drop a little lemon juice into it to awaken digestion. You need to have breakfast 1.5-2 hours after getting up. It is interesting that yogis do not get up later than 6 o’clock in the morning - it is believed that otherwise a person is not able to find harmony, does not have time to recharge for improved health and may make mistakes during the day.

Lunch time lasts from 12 to 15.00, during this period you should take the most nutritious foods: cereals, proteins, nuts, adhering to the rules of compatibility. If you have not yet given up meat, you should eat it during the daytime. Soups or beans are also good for lunch, you can eat fish. The serving can be supplemented with raw or lightly boiled vegetables.

Dinner should be completed at least 3-4 hours before bedtime. You should not overload your stomach so that your body can rest and recover at night. The best foods for evening meals are low-starch or non-starchy vegetables, warm low-fat milk, vegetable stews or soups.

Regarding the question of nutrition for yogis, the menu for the week is approximately as follows.

Of course, you can create your own menu or change the names of products. In order not to disrupt the digestive cycle, it is not recommended to have snacks between main meals. If 3 meals a day is not enough for you, it’s better to introduce a 4th light afternoon snack first. But you can drink water, herbal decoctions or special yoga tea. Gradually strive to reduce your meals to 2 or 3 meals.

The recipe for yoga tea is simple: boil a liter of water, add a cinnamon stick, 1 cm of ginger root, 5-7 black peppercorns, the same number of cardamom pods and 4-5 cloves. Simmer the broth over low heat for 20-30 minutes, strain. It is better to drink it in its pure form without adding honey; you can taste it with nuts. Spices can be added little by little to teas and dishes, but you need to make sure that the food does not become spicy.

In conclusion, we note that nutrition according to the principles of yoga should not be forced. The habit of eating right comes with time and is often dictated on a subconscious level. Cleared of the burden of extra pounds and bad habits, a person happily continues to follow his chosen path. Practical exercises combined with positive thinking and healthy eating prolong life, heal even chronic diseases and fill life with higher meaning.
