Choosing carpet: types and characteristics. Carpet - characteristics and application What kind of material is carpet?

Carpeting for the floor is the real embodiment of warmth and comfort. This material, softly “enveloping” your feet, can bring a touch of homely idyll to any room. It is a source of comfort available to one and all. However, this was not always the case. Several thousand years ago, carpets were a status item: only the “cream of society” could afford to own them.

With the development of the industry, carpets became more and more “earthly” acquisitions. Today's interest in this coating is fueled by the optimal combination of price, ergonomic properties and aesthetics carried through centuries.

But deciding on the choice of carpet for the floor is sometimes not an easy task, because the range of these products is practically overwhelming. A wealth of colors and patterns, a variety of materials and technologies used in production. What's the best option? It is impossible to answer this question unequivocally, because each specific premises sets its own requirements in this regard. What types of carpets exist and what you should pay attention to when purchasing - read on.

Classifications of carpet floor coverings

Depending on the production technology, there are:

  • woven;
  • needle-punched;
  • tufted;
  • flocked carpets.

Woven carpet It is produced using a method similar to conventional carpets - its base (mesh) is stitched with pile threads.

This coating is said to be “on a natural jute basis.” This is the most expensive type of carpet.

Needle-punched samples are rightfully considered the most wear-resistant. Their production technology involves piercing the fibrous base with special needles. As a result of their movement, the threads intertwine with each other and form a homogeneous, durable structure. Needle-punched floor coverings are characterized by the installation of a second, usually rubber, additional base.

Tufting principle is extremely simple - hundreds of needles pass threads through the lining fabric, while loops of a predetermined height are formed on its front side. Carpets made using this method make up the predominant part of the store's assortment.

The impact of an electrostatic field on the pile and its subsequent treatment with binders are integral stages of production. flocked products.

The structure of carpets can be:

  • loop one-level- all loops are the same height;
  • looped multi-level- different heights of loops;
  • split- the result of cutting the loop;
  • loop-split- there are both loops and cut pile.

Attention to the pile

In the vast majority of cases, synthetic fibers are used due to their wear resistance and hygiene. Polyester, polyacrylic, polypropylene, nylon - the market is rich in its offerings. From the point of view of ease of care, color fastness, softness (but wrinkle resistance), nylon looks more advantageous than others. Its only drawback is the high price.

Natural carpets made of wool (or with its inclusions) have good elasticity and an incomparably attractive appearance. Today they are not particularly popular due to their low wear resistance and high cost. In addition, wool coverings can cause allergic reactions.

The best carpet - how to choose carpet for your home

When you are on the verge of choosing carpet for your home, you should be extremely thoughtful and critical, because what is at stake is the comfort in the house plus a considerable sum of money (if we are talking about renovations throughout the entire house).

Be sure to pay attention to:

  • carpet production technology - after all, it directly affects its service life;
  • the density of the villi - the higher it is, the better.
  • availability of substrate/quality of base;
  • manufacturer's company - it is better to give your preference to Belgian, German or Dutch products;
  • pile height - high-pile samples (up to 35 mm) are ideal for bedrooms, and short-pile samples (no more than 5 mm) will become a practical decoration for the hallway and office;
  • presence of “aroma” - if you notice an unpleasant pungent odor from the product, this indicates the presence of harmful substances in it. By the way, it’s better to smell the center of the roll.

For living room A two-layer coating made by tufting is suitable.

For bedrooms- tufted high-pile.

For corridor and hallway- single-layer needle-punched.

IN bathrooms use carpet prohibited for very obvious reasons.

Color solution

Sand shades are preferred for cold rooms; In rooms with an excess of natural light, green and blue carpet looks harmonious. A multi-color coating will bring a touch of individualism and good mood to your home. In the office and bedroom, it is recommended to lay exclusively plain carpet of any calm tones, because bright colors are not appropriate in the work and rest areas.

Carpet tiles - a rational choice

In addition to the long-known carpet in rolls, there is another commercial form of carpet - modular tiles.

Its use relieves the buyer from a number of inconveniences - complex measurements, calculations, cutting of material, and the formation of large amounts of waste. To work with modular samples, you just need to know the total area of the room. Carpet tiles are easy to repair - noticeably worn fragments can be easily replaced.

Carpet- floor covering that appeared in the fifties of the last century. Carpet was invented by an American engineer who learned how to produce carpets using the tufting method (pile made of synthetic fiber).

Today, carpet is a covering with a pile. It has excellent dirt-repellent properties and is practically insensitive to moisture. The pile can be low, medium, and high. Thanks to this, carpet is used in both commercial and residential premises.

Carpet is made from natural and synthetic yarn.

Synthetic carpet is much cheaper than natural carpet, but it is also significantly inferior in properties. Synthetic carpet is made from:

  • Nylon/polyamide. This type has good characteristics - there are no visible dents on it, it does not fade, it holds the pile well, and is easy to clean. The service life of nylon carpet is 10-15 years.
  • Acrylic/polyester. One of the cheapest types. Service life is up to eight years.
  • Polypropinel. Very low quality, lasts no more than five years, but easy to clean.
  • Supreme/terclone. Similar to wool, soft, easy to clean.

Types of carpet:

  • Woven;
  • Tufted. The base is stitched with pile threads;
  • Needle-punched. The threads are driven into the warp with needles.

Skirting for carpet

Before laying carpet, you need to purchase a carpet skirting board. This is a plastic plinth with an L-shaped section. The narrow part (“cap”) is slightly bent down and painted, and the wide part is equipped with adhesive tape. This is, so to speak, a special groove into which the carpet tape is inserted. Well, now you can choose carpet!

Carpet from famous manufacturers

Today the market is teeming with choice, and when deciding to purchase carpet, an ordinary buyer may simply get confused. To avoid such a situation, let's look at the most famous manufacturers, whose quality and guarantee have been tested over the years and by many buyers.

Carpet Domo

One of the leading companies in the European market. The company produces Domo carpets any direction. The feature that sets this brand apart from others is the special antistatic and anti-dirt impregnation Bayprotect. Thanks to this impregnation carpet Domo does not become dirty for much longer and naturally requires lower costs.

The main part of TM Domo coverings is tufted carpets.

Consider one of the popular brands - Kasbar carpet.

This type of carpet is intended for residential premises. It can also be used in offices where there is little traffic. With timely cleaning and proper care, it retains its original appearance for a very long time. It has a multi-level pile, this structure is called “scroll”.

Carpet Balta

A very old company, founded in 1964. Today it is a huge holding of eight divisions. Balta Industries produces carpet Balta, linoleum, parquet, wallpaper. The range covers almost all types of carpet - from loop carpet to original wool collections. A distinctive feature of this company is the use of high-quality polypropylene and polyamide threads of its own production. In the production process of natural carpets, exclusively New Zealand wool is used. In general - everything is at the highest level. And one can only envy the quality of the Balta carpet.

Carpet Balta Berberrock

Tufted carpet is especially popular among consumers. The pile is made of 100% wool. Height - 1.1 cm, total thickness - 1.4 cm. Base - jute. Carpet belongs to wear resistance class 23. According to the European standard, it has a fire resistance class of Cfl s1.

Carpets Desso

Desso is one of the European leaders in the production of carpets for any purpose. The company constantly updates models, modernizes production, and is always one step ahead of the rest. Distinctive features of Desso carpet are ease of installation, versatility and high wear resistance.

It is also worth noting the high characteristics - fire resistance, strength, high resistance to deformation.

Carpet Desso Alumina

Carpet Desso Alumina is an atmosphere of true chic in a modern interior. This type of rug comes in bright, rich colors that are inspired by the glossy metallic elements found in jewelry. The colors of this collection can be combined with any parts of the interior - upholstery, wood, metal, etc. These carpets will look great both in a small office and a luxurious country cottage.

Choosing carpet for your home

Carpet for home- this is not the last thing. And the choice should be taken no less seriously. You can choose any type from those described above, or purchase carpet made from natural fiber. Natural fiber carpet has a number of advantages, but also has its disadvantages.

Advantages of natural fiber carpet:

  • Does not fade in the sun;
  • High resilience and elasticity;
  • Natural antistatic;
  • No synthetic shine:
  • Environmental friendliness.

But it also has its drawbacks: moisture resistance and low wear resistance; cleaning; relatively high price.

When choosing carpet, pay special attention to the density - the higher it is, the better all the characteristics of the material. For the living room, it is advisable to purchase carpet with a medium density, but for the bedroom you can buy it cheaper, that is, with a low density.

The price also depends on the painting method. The highest quality and most expensive is dyeing in bulk, that is, ready-made threads are dyed. If the villi are painted down to the base, you can take them without hesitation. Otherwise, you are dealing with cheap carpet (which can be passed off as expensive).

As for the aesthetic appearance - here they say “taste and color...”. A carpet with a high pile will be practical in the bedroom, but in the hallway it is better to lay a carpet with a low pile (high pile wrinkles quickly). In the living room you can lay carpet with a medium pile or multi-level. This is a matter of personal taste.

Choosing carpet for a children's room

Children's carpet- this is a slightly different concept. And the choice of carpet for a nursery must be taken more seriously than for another room.

There are 6 main conditions that must be followed when choosing carpet for a children's room:

  • The carpet for a nursery should be soft. Children love to play on the floor and you must prevent them from getting injured.
  • Children's carpet must have high thermal insulation properties so that your child does not get a cold.
  • Non-flammability and antistatic properties are two more necessary conditions for this type of carpet. In addition, it should not cause allergies in the child.
  • Children's carpet should be easy to clean, because kids often get the floor dirty.
  • All children are very active, so there will always be some movement on the carpet. Therefore, it must be strong and stable.
  • If your child is still very small, buy carpet in cheerful colors. This way you will create the necessary emotional background in the children's room.

Now it's time to talk about the base of the carpet. Carpet base There are several types. The most popular are: rubber-based, rubberized-based, foam-based, jute-based, felt-based, etc.

Carpet base

Primary basis

It is used in all types that are produced by tufting. The pile is secured using the primary base. It can be woven or non-woven. The fabric base is made of polypropinel.

The process of making the primary base and fixing the pile are the very first stages of carpet production.

Fixing layer

During use, carpet is subjected to strong physical impact, so it is necessary that it can restore its previous appearance and retain its original structure. To do this, it is necessary to attach the threads very firmly, which is done using a special composition. This composition is most often based on latex. After this, the finished product is subjected to testing, during which the strength of the material is determined.

Secondary base

After all the above steps, a secondary layer is applied. Usually this is foamed latex or a textile layer that will be in direct contact with the floor. The secondary base gives the carpet a number of undeniable advantages: additional firmness and elasticity; wear resistance; slip resistance; sound and thermal insulation properties.

We will look at one of the most popular types - rubber-based carpet.

Rubber backed carpet or carpet on a foam backing.

Latex rubber is a relatively new material on our market. But it has already gained great popularity among carpet manufacturers. The foam base provides additional softness and therefore high walking comfort. Application of the secondary base occurs in two stages - application and polymerization of the layer.

High pile carpet

Pile carpet- that's good, but high pile carpet, that is warm carpet- better. High-pile carpet (1 cm or more) is more demanding than other types, but it has all the advantages and disadvantages for which everyone loves this type of covering.

This type has very high thermal and sound insulating properties. It is ideal for the bedroom of your home. Often it is chosen either for the bedroom or for the children's room. It is soft, beautiful, pleasant to the touch, and simply very practical. It does not accumulate electricity, which is very important for a nursery.

A wide range of colors will allow you to choose a carpet specifically for your interior.

Carpet laying

We have already decided on the carpet, and besides, we have a ready-made carpet overlock on hand. Now we face the next task - how to do the styling correctly. Well, read below...

Carpet underlay laid to improve sound and thermal insulation. This is especially important when floor carpet laid on a concrete floor. If the carpet is laid on parquet, then without a backing it will scratch the parquet varnish, which is not very pleasant for the owners of the house. Therefore, it is not worth saving on carpet backing.

The carpet is laid on a perfectly flat surface, so if necessary, level the floor with hardboard or plywood. It is not necessary to glue the entire surface. Carpet adhesive is suitable for both regular PVA and special ones. Nowadays, carpet adhesive from a Polish manufacturer under the TM “Ecolep Lakma” is quite well known. This is an environmentally friendly adhesive, created specifically for gluing different coatings. It is necessary to carefully peck the edges under the baseboards and the doorway.

There are 4 ways to lay carpet. We will tell you about them, and it’s up to you to choose which one to use.

Laying carpet without gluing it to the floor

This method is especially relevant for small rooms where no more than one sheet of covering is used.

  • To begin, unroll the coating so that it protrudes 7-10 cm above the baseboard, then roll it with a roller. You need to roll from the center to the edges (walls).
  • Now we cut out the corners of the covering in a V shape with a knife, and now we cut along the baseboard.

Gluing without connection

  • As in the previous case, we unfold and cut out the coating.
  • We bend it in the center, and using a spatula, apply glue to the open part of the floor.
  • Smooth out with a roller from the center. The same operations are performed with the second half of the coating.

Simultaneous connection

  • We spread and cut the covering, as in the methods described above, but we lay the sheets overlapping by 4-5 cm.
  • We unfold the sheet 2/3 of the width and apply glue to the open part.
  • We lower and glue the covering, as in the previous case. We perform the same operations with the second sheet.
  • Raise the edges and apply glue to the floor.
  • Cut both edges at the same time. This is done using a ruler.
  • Lower the sides and smooth out.

When laying carpet, it is necessary to take into account all the little things in order to achieve maximum effect and subsequent comfort. If you are gluing a covering based on natural jute, carefully monitor the dose of glue, since excess glue, passing through the natural base, irreversibly damages the pile. Loop carpets are usually glued over the entire surface. But in the kitchen, the carpet can be laid like a regular carpet. If you use additional padding (felt or polyurethane), make sure that its thickness does not exceed 0.5 mm.

Stretching

This method of carpet installation can be done by masters of their craft. This method uses the elasticity that all textile coverings have. Narrow slats are attached along the walls, in which there are two rows of nails driven at an angle. The carpet is laid on these slats and stretched using special tools. Felt is placed under the carpet, which adds softness to it.

Carpet care

Constant carpet care- these are several simple operations, by performing which you will prolong the carpet’s original appearance and characteristics for a long time. First of all, this means vacuuming several times a week. Natural carpet is strictly prohibited from being cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. The long fibers of the coating will be heavily saturated with moisture, and it will be very difficult to get rid of the feeling of constant dampness. For natural carpet, experts recommend a vacuum cleaner with a rotating electric brush. Dry cleaning works well. Once a month you can carry out wet cleaning.

Artificial carpet is cleaned with the same regularity as natural carpet. You can use a vacuum cleaner, but be careful when doing so. If excess water accumulates, you can wash out the solution, which prevents dirt formation. All fibers of the coating are impregnated with this solution.

Broom - forget about this word altogether. It is simply impossible to sweep away dirt from the fibers.

Carpet dry cleaning

Every six months it is necessary to dry clean the carpet. We should immediately remind you that under no circumstances try to do this on your own. At best, you will ruin its appearance, and at worst, you will simply throw it away.

Now there are a lot of companies that will come to you and carry out all the necessary cleaning operations. In addition, there is another advantage to calling specialists - they will treat your carpet with a special solution that will completely restore its water-repellent properties.

Fighting stains

Sooner or later, stains appear on the carpet. The main thing is to have time to get them out in time, otherwise they may remain there. And in general, if you are the lucky one who purchased carpet, you immediately need to buy the entire arsenal of items to combat stains. So, what does the standard set include:

  • Special detergent;
  • Paper towel;
  • Ammonia. To remove stains, make a solution of 2 tbsp. per liter of water;
  • Vinegar;
  • Stain remover.

Removing stains from carpet:

  • Remove the thick substance with a spoon, from the edge to the center of the stain;
  • Blot the stain with a paper towel;
  • Do not rub it under any circumstances;
  • We soak a rag in the stain remover and remove the stain;
  • We wash the area where the stain was with water. Let it dry.

Almost all stains can be removed on your own. The following stains cannot be removed: shoe polish, paint, rust, and similar serious stains. Only dry cleaning specialists will remove them.

For more than half a century, it has been one of the most common flooring materials. However, each floor covering has its own service life, which depends, among other things, on its thickness.

The thickness of the carpet consists of the base and the woven fabric (pile length). For example, if the floor in a room in your house has uneven surfaces, then the ideal solution would be to lay carpet with a long pile of 8-10 mm.
This coating will ideally hide all the unevenness of the floor and will be very comfortable to walk on.

However, remember that such a carpet will only visually hide the unevenness of the floor. Moreover, he is afraid of heavy loads and dust quickly accumulates on him. A carpet made of a synthetic felt base - felt - 2-3 mm thick will help hide large differences in the floor.

Many argue that you should use carpet made from natural wool fibers, as it is environmentally friendly, retains heat and is comfortable to walk on.

However, the following phrase can serve as a kind of motto for this carpet: “warmth requires sacrifice.” Wool is a strong allergen. Her hairs fly around the apartment, get clogged in the equipment, and in fact they can be hazardous to health. Various microorganisms—bugs—can accumulate in wool carpets, which are almost impossible to get rid of.

If you have already decided on the thickness of the carpet, you need to measure the area of the room, taking into account all the space (corners, protrusions, etc.). It is better to take flooring with a reserve - approximately 10% of the total square footage of the room.

If you have already purchased carpet, then remember that the carpet must be stored in a dry room at a temperature not lower than fourteen degrees.

;

Carpet service life

The carpet in the room is an integral, important part of the interior. If you want your floor to last as long as possible and look like new, you need to adhere to the following rules:

Carpet selection. The ideal option is carpeting made from polyamide fibers. With a felt base 2-3 mm thick and a pile 4 mm long. A floor made of such material is practical, easy to clean, fireproof, does not cause allergies, and has good sound and heat insulation properties. A carpet with a short solid pile will last longer than a carpet with a long one.

Correct installation of carpet. If you doubt your abilities and knowledge in flooring, we advise you to seek the help of professionals. Surely, the store where you purchased the material offered you such a service.

Room traffic. Always choose carpet based on the load level of a particular room. So, there is less traffic in the bedroom than in the corridor.

Timely and proper carpet cleaning will extend the life of the carpet floor. It is important to get rid of stains and other contaminants immediately. Moreover, there are plenty of means and methods for cleaning carpet. You can read about this.

However, the service life of carpet is not long - five to seven years.

Basic rules for laying carpet.

If you decide to lay carpet on a wooden floor, the first thing you need to do is level it. This can be done by covering the floor of the room with plywood. Having covered the joints with putty and removed construction debris, the room will be ready for carpeting. Remember that the room temperature should not be lower than fifteen degrees. Roll out the carpet and let it sit until it becomes smooth.

Then lay the carpet along the width of the roll, usually from window to door. In this case, we place one edge of the covering in a joint with the smoothest wall of the room. If no large gaps have formed, then you will only have to cut the coating on three sides. Otherwise, you will have to cut off the fourth one.

There are two ways to fix carpet: adhesive and with the help floor skirting boards.

In the first method, the carpet is laid on a base that has already been treated with glue and smoothed out. The second method involves fixing the carpet with tape and baseboards.

It will also be useful for repairs.

Most Russian apartments have problems with cold floors. The onset of cold weather significantly reduces the temperature in the rooms, and standard heating is not always enough to warm up all corners of the room: the floor often remains cold. It is for this reason that people often use various types of floor coverings.

The leader among coverings is carpet, since it is a universal material and can be used to cover a room of any purpose and size.

What it is?

Carpet is a floor covering that, in its properties and qualities, is very similar to carpet, however, There are a lot of differences between these two home covering options:

  • The first and most important thing is that carpet does not have clear dimensions; you can independently choose the desired length or width of the covering, because carpet is most often sold in specialized stores in the form of rolls. When purchasing, a person indicates the desired size, and the seller cuts off the required amount of the desired covering. The carpet has a clear size and shape.
  • In addition, the carpet initially has well-processed edges of the product, but a piece of carpet will require special processing. Most often, large points of sale offer the use of overlocking services when purchasing. The cost of the service is low, but the preservation of the tidy appearance of the coating for a long time is ensured.

  • Another difference is the color. A full-fledged carpet usually has a finished pattern, most often made from the center of the product to the edges, but for carpet this principle is impractical, again due to the uncertainty of the size of the covering, so most often the pattern on the carpet is repeated throughout the entire canvas.
  • Carpet does not cause any difficulties in laying on the floor; if the edge is pre-treated, then you just need to lay out the material and give it some time to straighten.
  • Another advantageous difference between carpet and carpet is its relatively low cost, so on average a linear meter of coverage can be purchased for 300-500 rubles, which will significantly save your budget in contrast to the cost of a standard full-fledged carpet.

Peculiarities

Carpet, like any other modern floor covering, has its own characteristics:

  • First of all, it is necessary to note the rigid substrate on which the coating is created. This underlay provides a static connection between the coating and the floor, prevents the coating from creasing and ensures a long service life, which is very convenient for high-traffic areas.
  • The purpose and type of carpet will depend on the location. So, for offices, corridors, stairs, household carpet would be an ideal option; as a rule, it is hard, has a short loop pile or a smooth surface, which means it is easy to clean, does not wear out for a long time, the color scheme of such carpet is usually dark and with a minimum of patterns. The cost of this type of covering is usually quite low, so finishing even a fairly large room with carpet will not require large expenses.

  • But for the bedroom, it is better to choose a type of high-pile carpet. A soft fluffy carpet in the relaxation room will provide the most soft and warm floor that will delight you for a long time. The cost of such coverage is usually higher, however, in comparison with buying a carpet, the cost of carpet will in any case be lower.
  • Since carpet has the peculiarity of being sold by the meter, you can choose pieces of various sizes, thereby filling a room of absolutely any configuration; this option is especially convenient for an apartment with a non-standard location, for example, with bay windows or a bevel of one or several corners.

This type of coating also has its pros and cons.

The advantages of carpet include:

  • providing a cozy home environment indoors;
  • interior decoration;
  • sound insulation;
  • providing thermal insulation: contact with a cold floor in a room is no longer scary;

  • light weight of the coating: if necessary, it can be easily rolled up and moved to another place;
  • the carpet has a special fire-fighting treatment, as well as treatment against various insects that may take a liking to the carpet;
  • not picky about cleaning;
  • long service life;
  • low cost.

However, this coating also has disadvantages, for example:

  • the coating can accumulate dust, which can subsequently cause allergies in humans; the problem can be solved by regular cleaning with a vacuum cleaner;
  • If moisture gets in, it is necessary to dry the product thoroughly, otherwise a musty smell may appear in the room.

Kinds

Carpet can be divided into types according to several criteria. For example, one of the main criteria can be called the production method.

According to the production method, the following types of carpet are distinguished:

  • Woven carpet. This type is the most expensive of all types of coating, since the base of such a coating is natural jute. When manufacturing from jute fiber, a special base mesh is created, to which a pile of natural or synthetic fiber is attached. This type of carpet has increased durability, so it is well suited for a bedroom, nursery or living room.

  • Needle-punched. Here, a thick and durable layer of fiber is used for the base of the pile, which is pierced with a special needle during the production process. But the base of this type of coating is usually made of rubber, which completely prevents the coating from sliding on the floor. If you need a lint-free rug, you need to pay attention to the needle-punched option.

The question may arise: what is the difference between needle-punched carpet and other types? First of all, it has the lowest cost and the highest level of noise absorption, so it is often used in living rooms with home theaters and home recording studios.

In addition, it is worth noting that tile carpet is usually produced in this way.

  • Tufted. This type of coating is obtained by using fibers of different lengths and thicknesses, due to which a pattern is formed on the surface of the coating. This pattern is usually voluminous, so this type of coating is used for decorating rooms. The disadvantage of such a coating will be the difficulty in cleaning the multi-level pile. The base of such a covering is usually made of latex, which, as in the case of needle-punched carpet, eliminates slipping and unwanted movement of the covering.
  • Flocked coating. This coating is most suitable for placement in a bathroom or kitchen, as it has a waterproof base and the shortest possible pile of up to 3 mm. Cleaning such pile does not cause difficulties and is as convenient as possible for the user.

In addition to the production method, there is another characteristic by which carpet can be divided into several types. This sign is the type of pile of the coating. There are eight main types of pile:

  • Saxony. One of the most common types of long-pile carpeting. This coating is made mainly from twisted natural fibers, and therefore has a fairly high cost. This type of coating is most often used in the bedroom due to its softness and pleasant tactile contact.
  • Shag. This pile is a type of Saxony. Here, too, natural twisted thread forms an even cover, however, the cover is much coarser, and the length of the pile can reach 4 centimeters. This type of pile is great for creating a coating that is popular today - grass.

  • Friese. In this case, the pile is a tightly twisted thread, similar in appearance to Saxony, however, the carpet is fluffier and softer. Also great for bedroom or living room. In addition, this coating has one significant advantage: traces of furniture and steps are invisible on such a coating.
  • Scroll. Volumetric pile, which becomes such due to the use of threads of different lengths. In addition, the threads can have different colors, which determines the pattern not only due to different lengths of the pile, but also due to the color.

  • Katlup. Another type of volumetric pile, only in this situation the volume is formed by loop pile and standard cut pile. This combination gives an unusual effect, however, with it comes difficulties in cleaning the coating.
  • Boucle. A method of making pile that uses knotting. Each knot is part of the overall fabric. This coating looks very impressive, while being very practical and durable. In addition, this coating does not have memory and does not show signs of dents from furniture that has been standing on the coating for a long time.

  • Felt. This type of carpet is formed by pressing several layers of wool yarn. This type of carpet is the most popular among lint-free coverings because it is easy to clean and has a long service life.
  • Velours. The softest and most elastic material. Due to this feature, it is most often used in bedrooms and children's rooms. Cleaning is not a hassle, however, dents are well preserved, and dirt becomes immediately noticeable.

Materials

Modern technologies make it possible to successfully use both natural and artificial materials for the manufacture of coatings. Natural material, usually wool or mixed. The mixed type consists of 30 percent natural wool, the rest of the composition may vary depending on the type of coating. Most often, 70% of the material in a mixed type carpet is natural cotton, jute, linen, silk or paper.

Carpet made from natural materials is distinguished not only by its composition, but also by its seamless texture. Since natural material is more expensive, the quality of the pattern and texture in this case is better.

In addition, the bamboo version can be considered a natural model; it is also highly environmentally friendly, durable and suitable for use in any room.

Unusual interior solutions, for example, in an ecological style, can also be easily complemented with carpet made from natural materials. An excellent solution here is a matting.

Among the most popular synthetic materials are polyamide and polypropylene. Nylon and acrylic carpet are also artificial types of covering; these materials have an increased antistatic effect. In addition, nylon has increased softness and immunity to direct sunlight, which allows us to speak of it as a material least susceptible to fading.

Synthetic materials amaze the imagination with a variety of textures and colors; today you can find carpet for any interior and for any purpose, including the grass covering that is popular today.

This coating allows you to create a piece of nature indoors and enjoy the created harmony and beauty for a long time.

Color solutions

Today on the market there is a huge amount of carpet of various colors, you can find both completely monochromatic options and with various prints and patterns.

The choice of color scheme will directly depend on the overall design of the room:

  • Thus, carpet in a room can fulfill two roles: to be an accent or to have a neutral color scheme that will match the color scheme of the room’s decoration.
  • The purpose of the room also plays a significant role when choosing colors. When decorating a bedroom, you should take a closer look at colors such as white, beige, gray; they will add light to the room and visually expand the space. If you want to add depth, you can turn to colors such as blue, emerald, burgundy and purple. These colors will add mystery to the interior, and the right print will make the bedroom look like palace chambers.

  • Warm colors are perfect for the living room. Bright orange, yellow, and red colors will add cheerfulness to the room and create a pleasant color accent.
  • For children's rooms it is also worth using brighter colors. So, the ideal color for a nursery is green. Despite its brightness, this particular color is able to create a healthy atmosphere in the room and add a touch of tranquility to it. In addition, when creating the interior of a children's room, you can use standard pink and blue colors. They are also intended to help create a gender-oriented nursery.

Dimensions

Carpet, unlike a carpet, does not have clearly limited dimensions; you can adjust them at your discretion by purchasing a piece of the required length.

It still has one important dimension that you need to take into account when choosing - this is width:

  • The standard width of rolled carpet is 4 meters. This is the most common option that can be found on sale in almost any retail store. By purchasing a piece of such carpet, you can get a full-fledged carpet with a length or width of 4 meters; the second dimension will depend on the chosen footage.

For example, you can buy a linear meter of linen, ask to overlay it and get a narrow path along the length of the room, or choose 3-4 meters and cover the entire room.

You can also buy one piece and divide it into several separate ones. In this simple way, you can get several carpets at once, which can be changed during cleaning, or you can cover several rooms with the same fabric at once, combining their style solutions.

  • At times when a width of more than 4 meters is required, it is not necessary to immediately resort to the joining method and create a covering from several sections. Today, many retail chains, and online stores are not far behind them, offer for purchase carpets 5 meters wide, in some cases even 6. The range of such coverings is still small, however, due to fairly high demand, more and more colors and colors are appearing every day. texture solutions in carpet lines with increased width.
  • Another criterion by which carpet can be measured is its thickness. The standard coating thickness is 5-10 mm. Thickness may vary depending on the length of the pile, pattern and density of the material. The thickest carpet is made from wool using high pile, but the thinnest options are usually lint-free.

How to choose?

When choosing a carpet, you must first decide on its purpose and the place where it will be located. This will help determine the required size of the coating, its color scheme and select the optimal material.

If you define these criteria in advance, you won’t have to get lost in the variety of choices in the store and the purchase will be much faster and more enjoyable:

  • It is necessary to decide on the material of the product, whether it will be natural or artificial fiber will attract attention. Natural materials are non-toxic, safe, easy to care for and have a high degree of thermal conductivity, which allows them to easily cope with the main task of flooring. The main disadvantage of this coating is its high cost.
  • Artificial surfaces also have many advantages. They are soft, easy to clean, safe to use and have a lower cost. However, artificial surfaces have a shorter service life.

  • If your budget allows, it is better to opt for a natural coating, however, a high-quality artificial one will last quite a long time, with virtually no difference in appearance.
  • When purchasing, you should also pay attention to the reverse side of the carpet: the rubberized surface will be an excellent choice, since it will prevent slipping and provide maximum noise and heat insulation.
  • Carpeting for different rooms may also differ. For example, for the hallway and corridor it is better to choose lint-free models that will not accumulate dust and dirt. These carpets are easy to clean and dry quickly after contact with moisture.

  • For the kitchen and dining room, you should also pay attention to short-pile or lint-free options. In addition, it is worth paying attention to models with special water-repellent impregnation, this will help preserve the original appearance of the material for a long time.
  • For the living room, it is better to choose options with wrinkle-resistant pile, since this room usually has high traffic and contains a sufficient amount of heavy furniture. In addition, it’s a good idea to choose an option with dust-repellent properties.

  • For a child's room, you should choose a medium-pile carpet in a non-marking color. Another important selection criterion is the ease of cleaning the product, because children are active and can often spill water, paints and other dirty substances while playing.
  • For the bedroom you can choose almost any option you like. This is exactly the room where you can use a long-pile thick carpet, the only rule is proper care.

It is necessary to regularly clean the coating to prevent dust from accumulating in it.

Which is better: laminate, linoleum or carpet?

In order to determine what is better - linoleum, carpet or laminate, it is worth considering the pros and cons of coatings:

  • Linoleum is a fairly durable material. It has excellent heat and sound insulating properties. There are colloxylin, rubber, alkyd, and polyvinyl chloride varieties of linoleum. High-quality dense linoleum can be laid on an unprepared floor surface; it will help hide unevenness, cracks and other defects of the natural surface. The color range is quite wide; you can choose linoleum that will serve as an imitation of other types of coating, for example, wood, tiles or even fur.

Linoleum is an ideal option for the kitchen because it is not afraid of moisture and is non-flammable. The cost is low, however, such a floor is unlikely to warm you in winter, especially not to use it on a balcony, since low temperatures not only cool the linoleum excessively, but also lead to deformation and fractures.

Probably, each of us has heard about such flooring material as carpeting. It is not surprising, because due to the wide variety of types it is used in both residential and commercial premises.

Carpeting, or carpet, is a floor covering with a pile, and unlike carpet, it is laid over the entire surface of the floor in a particular room. Carpeting is made from synthetic or natural yarn in the form of rolls of unlimited length. This is very convenient, because regardless of the area of the room, the material is able to perfectly cover its entire surface.

The most common types of carpets:

  • Braided carpet - it can have both natural and synthetic fibers in its composition. The pile is intertwined with the base using a special technology, so the product is one of the highest quality and durable coatings.
  • Pile carpet - threads are attached to the base of the carpet using an adhesive composition. This carpet has a rigid base and high strength. The density of the carpet here is excellent.
  • A carpet made using the pulling technique is mainly used in offices and public buildings. Its main characteristics are low cost and high level of sound absorption.
  • Carpet with flock - the placement of carpet yarn on the backing occurs through the creation of an electrostatic field. The length of the pile is less than 3 mm.

According to their structure, carpets can be divided into four layers: pile, fixing layer, primary base, secondary base. The pile is made mainly from wool, polypropylene or polyamide. Latex and jute are used for the base of the carpet. Carpet pile can be made from natural (wool) and synthetic materials.

Basic properties and types of carpet with synthetic pile

  • Polyamide / nylon - fifteen-year service life, easy to care for, can withstand sunlight without fading, and also holds its shape perfectly.
  • Acrylic / polyester - service life is about eight years, soft texture, relatively high price, difficult to care for, tends to electrify.
  • Supra / terklon - will serve you for no more than 5 - 8 years, very soft texture, good heat and sound insulation properties.
  • Polypropylene - service life is about 5 years, easy to clean, has a low durability and wear resistance status.

Basic properties and types of carpet with natural (wool) pile

  • Environmental Safety,
  • Good flexibility and elasticity,
  • Natural antistatic properties,
  • Doesn't fade in the sun
  • Does not have synthetic shine,
  • Low moisture resistance and high durability,
  • Relatively high cost.

Density and weight of carpet

Pile weight refers to the number of yarn fibers in one square meter of carpet. Pile weight also indicates how dense the individual carpet naps are. The density of a rug, or the closeness of one individual thread to another, affects how the rug behaves when walked on, as well as how it will look in the long term. The higher the number of yarn fibers in the carpet, the greater the overall density of the product can be observed.

Generally, carpet density is measured in ounces, with typical density ranging from 30 to 60 grams. Densities greater than 60 ounces are available commercially, but are more expensive due to the large number of individual fibers in these carpets.

The role of pile mass and density in noise reduction

Any sound that comes from objects falling on the floor, footsteps, or moving furniture is called surface noise. The higher the density of the carpet, the better it will be able to convert loud surface noises into muffled sounds. Carpeting can reduce surface noise levels by half.

The transmission of echoes or noise in a room can also be reduced by high-density carpeting. Noise that bounces off a hard floor and causes an echo will be effectively absorbed by carpeting. All this is possible thanks to the porous structure of carpets.

Carpeting is often used in floor finishing. It can be found almost everywhere: in homes, offices or even industrial facilities.
