Troparion to the Mother of God, voice 4th

To the Mother of God, we are diligently now a dear, sinful and humble, and we will fall, in repentance calling from the depths of our souls: Lady, help, having mercy on us, sweep, we are perishing from many sins, do not turn away Your slaves, you are the same hope of the imam. (Twice) Glory, and now: We will never keep silent, Mother of God, Your power to speak unworthy: if you wouldn’t have to pray, who would have saved us from a bit of trouble, who would have kept us free to this day? We will not retreat, Lady, from You: save Your servants from all fierce ones. Now we will zealously resort to the Mother of God / we, sinful and humble, and we will fall to Her, / crying from the depths of our souls in repentance: / “Lady, help, having taken pity on us, / hasten, we are perishing from a multitude of sins! / Do not let your slaves go empty-handed: / for in you we have the only hope! " (Twice)

Glory, and now: We will never stop, we unworthy, / to proclaim Your power, Mother of God, / for if you had not protected us with Your prayers, / who would have saved us from so many troubles, / who would have kept us free until now? / We will not retreat, Lady, from You, / for You always save Your servants from all calamities.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy compassions, cleanse my iniquity. Wash me most of all from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my iniquity, and my sin is before me I will take out. To Thee, who alone have sinned, and have done good before Thee; as if you were justified in your words, and conquer from time to time to judge Ti. Behold, in transgressions I am conceived, and in sins bore me my mother. Behold, you loved the truth; You have revealed your unknown and secret wisdom. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; wash me, and I will be white as snow. Give joy and joy to my hearing; the bones of the humble will be reborn. Turn away Thy face from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquity. Build a pure heart in me, O God, and renew the spirit of rights in my womb. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Reward with me the joy of Thy salvation and, with the Spirit of the Lord, confirm me. I will teach the wicked in Thy way, and the wicked will turn to Thee. Deliver me from the blood, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue will rejoice in Thy righteousness. O Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. As if you would have wanted sacrifices, you would have given them: do not favor burnt offerings. The sacrifice to God the spirit is broken; a contrite and humble heart God will not despise. Bless, O Lord, with Thy good pleasure Zion, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then favor the sacrifice of righteousness, the offering and the burnt offering; then they will put calves on your altar. Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy and according to the multitude of Thy compassions, blot out my iniquity; Wash me completely from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me. To You, the One, I have sinned and done evil before You, so that you will be justified in Your words and conquer if they enter into judgment with You. For behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sins my mother gave birth to me. For behold, Thou hast loved the truth, Thy hidden and secret Thy wisdom revealed to me. You will sprinkle me with hyssop - and I will be cleansed; wash me - and I will become whiter than snow, let me hear joy and gladness - humiliated bones will rejoice.
Turn Thy face away from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create a clean heart in me, O God, and renew the Right Spirit within me. Do not take me away from Thy presence and do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me. Return to me the joy of Thy salvation and confirm me with the Spirit of the Sovereign. I will teach the wicked your ways, and the wicked will turn to you. Deliver me from the blood, O God, the God of my salvation, my tongue will rejoice in Thy righteousness. Lord, you will open my mouth, and my mouth will declare your praise. For if you had desired the sacrifice, I would have given it - you will not be pleased with burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; God will not despise a broken and humble heart. Bless, O Lord, in Thy grace, Zion, and may the walls of Jerusalem be erected, - then you graciously accept the sacrifice of righteousness, the offering and burnt offerings, then they will lay calves on Your altar.

In the canons, the chorus as a prayer invocation is pronounced before the first and second (and third, when there is) troparion of each song, but it is not read before the troparions, beginning with “Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit” and “And now and forever and forever and ever ... Amen".

The beginning of the canons is common.

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord, Jesus Christ, our God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Whoever is everywhere and fulfill all, Treasure of good things and life to the Giver, came and dwelt in us, and cleansed us from all sour, and save us.

Holy God, Holy Krepky, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Three times.)

Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Lord, forgive our iniquity; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, in your name.

Lord, have mercy (three times). Glory, and now:

Our Father, who is in Heaven, may Thy name be holy, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be, as in Heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and leave us our debts, as we also leave our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Tropari, voice 6:

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us, every answer is perplexed, I pray to you, as the Lord, we bring sinners, have mercy on us.

Glory: Lord, have mercy on us, in Thy trust, do not be angry with us, remember our iniquities below, but see also now, as it is gracious, and save us from our enemies, you are all our God, and we are the hand Yours, and Your name we call.

And now: Mercy doors open to us, Blessed Mother of God, who hope in Thee, let us not perish, but let us get rid of You from troubles, Thou art the salvation of the Christian race.

Have mercy on Lord, (12 times). Glory, and now:

Come, let us adore our King God.

Come, let us adore and fall down to Christ, our King God.

Come, let us adore and fall down on Christ Himself, the King and our God.

The same Psalm 50:

Have mercy on me, O God, according to the greatness of Thy mercy, and according to the abundance of Thy mercy, purify my transgression. Wash me most of all from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity, and I will take out my sin before me. We have sinned against You, and I have done evil in Your sight, that you may be justified in Your words, and conquer, always judge You. Behold, in transgression I am conceived, and in sins I begot my mother. Behold, Thou hast loved the truth, Thine unknowable and secret wisdom Thou hast revealed to me. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Give me joy and gladness to my hearing; the bones of humility will rejoice. Turn your face away from my sin, and cleanse all my iniquity. Create cleanly in my heart, O God, and renew the spirit of righteousness in my morning. Take me not away from Thy sight, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Give me the joy of Thy salvation, and confirm me by the Sovereign Spirit. I will teach the wicked, Thy ways, and iniquities will turn to Thee. Deliver me from the blood, O God, O God of my salvation, my tongue will rejoice in Thy righteousness. O Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. As if I had delighted in the sacrifice, I would have given it bye, the burnt offerings were not delightful. Sacrifice to God the spirit is broken, the heart is broken and humble God does not despise. Bless, O Lord, with Thy good pleasure Zion, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built up. Then delight in the sacrifice of righteousness, the rapture and the burnt sacrifice, then they will put calves on your altar.

The seventh sevenfold flame kindled with my crafty passions, and my heart always mortifies with the love of men: with the same currents of my tears extinguish him, Mother of God, and save him.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Turned over by the filth of my sins, do not reject me, Good Lady: for in vain I exist in despair, the evil enemy laughs: but yourself, raise up with your sovereign hand.

Glory: A terrible judge, passionate in my soul and insensible, and the torment is endless and terrible: but both now fall to the Mother of your Judge and God, and do not despair yourself.

And now: Passionate, darkened by a multitude of immeasurable evils, and defiling the soul and body and mind: the same Most Pure One, with the light of your radiance, soon bring me to the passionlessness of sweetness.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

I am terrified of the arrival of death, Most Pure One, and all of them are now afraid of the judgment: the evil deed, I am not ashamed of anything: gratify me before the end, with your prayers Virgo.

Glory: Silent groaning, Mistress, grant me, and give me clouds of tears, so I will wash away my many sins, and incurable ulcers: as if I will improve eternal life.

And now: My many confessions to you are evil to the Lady: as if there is not a single one in the world in the wrath of such God, your Son and your Lord: this will soon be at your mercy, Virgin.

Canto 9

Irmos: It is impossible to see God as a man, the rulers of Angelstia do not dare to look at the Worthless; By Thee, O All-Pure, the Word is Incarnate, Himself magnifying, with heavenly howls We please thee.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Behold, the Most Pure One is coming, with many fear and love, the fortress known to your many prayers, your servant, can truly be much more, Lady, the mother's prayer to the Son: she bows down with mercy.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Even from the Trinity of one God who gave birth, and carried into her hand, Virgin Mati: quench the passions of the fire chamber, and wash my soul with tear streams.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Face, accept the Archangel, and the multitude of the upper armies of my Creator, but the Apostle and the Prophet are cathedrals, and Martyrs, and Saints, and Hieromartyrs: and pray, O Pure One, for us to God.

Glory: And now and then I will find your help, Pure, at the same hour my spirit will go out: soon, with relief, deliver me from demonic torment, Immaculate One, and do not leave me Good, I will betray to be them.

And now: Judge the generous tea, and your philanthropic Son: Pure, do not despise me, but create it in good time, put me at my right hand then, All-blameless, to his most pure judgment: on your hopes.

According to biblical teaching, grief and discouragement are the result of a person's sinful life. Falling into them, the soul falls away from God, from the source of joy and love, peace and good. But the Lord promised to give a person according to his faith, therefore, despite various situations and phenomena that may occur in our life, even by our sins falling under one of the deadly sins - despondency, we must strive to get out of it as soon as possible, before this disease takes root and did not grow in my soul.

One of the ways that allows you to avoid a painful situation was to read a special rule that helps to overcome this dangerous spiritual disease. The rule is called the Penitential Canon. It can be read to the Guardian Angel, who is assigned to a person and is able, at the request of his ward, to do a lot for him, to the Lord and, of course, to our main Intercessor - the Queen of Heaven.

History

In the 8th century from the birth of Christ, the prayer canon of the Mother of God was created by a holy man, a spiritual writer named Theostirict (or Theoktist). It was a well-known admirer at one time sacred icons and the author of many spiritual texts.

Then the emperor Constantine Copronymus ruled in Greece. He was a cruel king, and the period of his reign is the time of the emergence of iconoclasm in addition to the persecution of the Church. The reign of the emperor Constantine Copronymus is sometimes even compared with the period of the reign of the pagan ruler Diocletian, who inhumanely mocked Christians. Likewise, this ruler subjected the monks to terrible tortures for their faithfulness to Christ, for the fact that they protected the icons.

Unfortunately, Saint Theostirictos was no exception: his nose and hands were burned with hot resin. The rest were stoned. However, this holy elder, the creator of the sacred penitential Canons to the Lord, the Theotokos and the saints, nevertheless steadfastly withstood the trials that fell to his lot and, as a result, lived a fruitful long life, having died in deep old age.

Ancient sources contain information that Saint Theostirictos often suffered from bouts of black despondency. It was associated with constant persecution by the emperor of the state against Christians of that time. He deeply worried about the fate of the Church of Christ, His people, as they were constantly being brutally attacked.

Therefore, being a deeply religious person and, moreover, having the gift of spiritual writing, he composed special hymnographic songs-poems, which were called the Sacred Penitential Canons to Christ, the Mother of God, the Guardian Angel. These chants supported the monk and allowed him to overcome this painful state and regain peace in his soul and harmony in his relationship with the Almighty.

Reading the canon today

Nowadays, believers who read these canons of Saint Theostirictos in special situations equally experience a positive result not only in relation to their inner state, but also note positive changes in their external, family, and personal life.

The canons are sung together with other chants or separately. The main thing is that prayer should come from the heart, this will ultimately play a decisive role.

About the language of the canon

Initially, since the canon was written by a Greek, it was created in the author's native language - Greek. After our ancestors, he was translated into the then Slavic. This language is still in our modern temples books are printed on it, according to which the clergy sing prayers in accordance with all the canons. For ease of use and understanding, new books have been released, in which all the words of the prayers are preserved, but printed in modern letters.

This made it much easier to understand. Actually, it is this variant that we see in almost all prayer books. At first, it is difficult to understand Slavic verbal constructions, the manner of expressing thoughts, long complex sentences, etc. But for Christians, for whom Russian became their second native language, but was not such initially, there are translations where all words and expressions of prayers are written as if they were written by a modern person using completely modern vocabulary. Such prayer books can be bought or heard, for example, on New Athos in Abkhazia.

Of course, the canons of repentance have been translated into all languages of the world, so that Christians from other nations could also begin this great legacy of the opportunity to heal their souls and receive help from above.

The main types of prayer chants to the Most Holy Theotokos

It should be noted that at the moment a rather significant number of prayers to the Mother of God have already been written, perhaps more than any of the saints or even the Lord. This is due to the many of Her holy miraculous icons. However, in general, all prayers, both large and small, are divided into:

  • prayer services,
  • repentant.

Prayer Canon to the Most Holy Theotokos

The most famous is the canon of the Mother of God, which begins with the words "to the Mother of God diligently now as a priest", the text of which is also used when singing a prayer service to the Mother of God. It was written in the 12th century by a novice of one of the monasteries of that time.

This prayer chant got its name due to the exceptionally soulful chanting verses, which are capable of causing every Christian praying with these words to a state that is called in the Gospel "contrition of the heart" - when a person not only recognizes his imperfection, but also begins to grieve about it, which ultimately leads to the fact that he becomes more human, kind, attentive.

This is what can be called "softening of evil hearts." This is not necessary in order to simply crush a person, weaken him and take away all his dignity. And, you can say, change the minus to plus. Replace pride with humility, meekness and love for one's neighbor - the same once damaged. Evil can also be replaced with love and forgiveness for all the sorrows caused and become kinder, and therefore stronger.

A person who is kind and strong in his heart and the will to do good returns within himself the true dignity of his soul. And more importantly, dignity before the eyes of God- so that he could not only by mercy give a person various benefits, but also because a kind and loving person simply deserves it.

Of course, humility before God (as the highest love) allows the creator to restore in us all the damaged parts of the soul and to give grace that the corrected human soul will be able to receive into itself. And with the return of the grace of God all evil and posthumous states of the soul leave by themselves from the soul of a person:

  • despondency,
  • anger,
  • rage,
  • lack of faith,
  • pride,
  • desire to judge everyone,
  • slander,
  • deceit,
  • lust and more.

At one time, such a blessed influence of prayer became the reason that the holy fathers included the canon Mother of God before Communion- every believer had to read it in order to approach with the right attitude to accepting the Body and Blood of Christ.

It should be noted that its initial purpose is indicated by a short explanation, which says that this chant is also worth starting to read when a person is overcome by various mental grief. The rule saves from her and from despondency.

Canon of penitence to the Most Holy Theotokos

In addition to prayer chants, a canon of penitence to our Most Holy Lady is also often published in the prayer book for laity and monks. The Christian Orthodox creed says that something that a person cannot forgive himself and others can be done by God. And also at all times, even from the time of her earthly wandering, the Mother of God could ask Her beautiful Son about people, about events - about everything.

And now, when She is the Queen of Heaven and Earth and has the grace from God to receive everything that she asks, she does not forget us. Therefore, all those who have realized the need for this resort to Her cover and protection from themselves, from sin and damage to the soul. Now she is the Helper and Patroness of all sinful people.

It is for this reason that all Christians (and not only) from century to century appeal to Her in their petitions for help from the consequences of their sinful actions. Resorting to the canons to the Mother of God, petitions about her help in atonement of the Falls- this chant to the Blessed Virgin Mary is the most accessible means to achieve this goal.

Canon to the Mother of God before communion

Before the sacrament, the combined canons are read:

  • To the Lord Jesus Christ,
  • Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos,
  • Guardian Angel.

One troparion (song) is taken from each canon. The chorus is sung between the songs (there are several of them, and they change depending on the place of the canon). To the Mother of God the chant sounds like "Most Holy Theotokos, save us." Alternatively, there may be "Most Holy Theotokos", with the letter "e" at the end. This should not be taken as a mistake, but you need to know that the ancient version of the pronunciation has been preserved, where the vocative case has been preserved, and it has the endings -о and -е.

The three canons before the sacrament are connected as follows:

  • irmos 1 of the song with the corresponding voice is taken from the canon of repentance to the Lord Jesus;
  • several 1 songs of the troparia of the penitential canon to the Lord;
  • troparia of 1 canon of the prayer canon to the Most Holy Theotokos, irmos is not sung;
  • the troparion of the 1st canon of canon to the Guardian Angel, irmos is also not sung. And so all 9 canon songs. It is important to know that the second canto of each of the listed canons is omitted. The second canon in the canons begins to be read in Great Lent, because it recalls the sufferings of Jesus Christ and everything that preceded this event.
  • After the third song, a sedal is read (you can sit on this piece).
  • After the sixth canto of the combined canon, the kontakion and ikos proposed in the prayer book are read.
  • At the end of the ninth canto, the proper prayers and psalms are recited.

This is the usual procedure for reading the combined canons. But, in any case, you should rely on the compiler of the prayer book: in them everything usually corresponds to the rules.

You can also apply for detailed explanations to the Liturgical Instructions or the Typicon - the complete charter of Church life and conducting prayers and services.

The meaning of the canons to the Most Holy Theotokos

Reading the canons before the Sacraments of Confession and Communion is a sequence of requests to the Lord and His Mother to give them the opportunity to confess, health, to give strength to proceed to Communion and to cleanse the soul in front of oneself and God, so that the Guardian Angel is relentlessly near and does not allow dark forces attack, influence and send bad thoughts, did not allow the spirit of despondency to the soul, etc., delivered from temptations. The Canon before the communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ is capable of:

  • help to tune the mind, heart and soul to communicate with the Heavenly Father,
  • give strength and health to go to confession,
  • free from sins,
  • give internal opportunities to fight them and evil spirits.

In no case should you justify your laziness, give yourself indulgences or blame someone else for your sins. Grief and shame for your actions must be unhypocritical. The health of the soul will communicate the strength and the fleshly component of a person.

Constant reading of the canon is capable of many things:

  • cure anger and anger.
  • calm down the desire to swear and quarrel,
  • give a good mood,
  • quench greed and give the desire to share good with people.

There are many examples when, after prayer, the most auspicious events happened to people, something that was previously inaccessible turned out. Prayer is the door to everyone's life for a different benefit. The Lord always hears (even if he does not show) the prayers of sinners, and many Angels, according to the assurance of Christ Jesus, rejoice in heaven and triumph when one of the sinners (and this is all of us) brings repentance to God and offers sincere prayers.

The reading of the canon to the Blessed Virgin Mary, like all other prayers, is necessary slowly, with heartfelt attention and contrition of the heart. It is of great importance to try to understand the meaning of the canon in order to receive the grace of God through the right attitude.

(Twice)

Glory, and now: We will never keep silent, Mother of God, Your power to speak unworthy: if you wouldn’t have to pray, who would have saved us from a bit of trouble, who would have kept us free to this day? We will not retreat, Lady, from You: save Your servants from all fierce ones.

Psalm 50

According to biblical teaching, discouragement and grief are states of a sinful plan. Since a person, falling into them, ceases to be a phenomenon of life, does not radiate vital energy. But it is said: "According to your light, let it be unto you" (the Apostle Paul).

Therefore, it is important, despite the different situations and phenomena that occur in life, even when you get into a state of despondency, to try to get out of it as soon as possible.

One of the ways, created back in the 8th century AD by Saint Theostirictos, is the singing of the Canon of the Penitent to the Lord, the Mother of God, the Guardian Angel. This will be discussed in this article.

About the author of canons

The monk Theostirictos (according to other sources Theoktirist) lived in the 8th century AD. He was a well-known devotee of sacred icons and a spiritual writer at that time.

It was during the years of his life that Constantine Copronymus ruled in Greece. This was a cruel king, since the period of his reign is considered the time of the development of iconoclasm in the church. Constantine Copronymus was even compared to the pagan emperor Diocletian, who cruelly mocked Christians.

Also, this ruler subjected the monks to terrible tortures because they defended the Christian faith, protected icons.

So St. Theostirictos was no exception: his hands and nose were burned with hot resin. Others were stoned.

Canons

In ancient sources it is reported that the saint often experienced a state of despondency due to the constant persecution of Christians by the ruler of the country. He was deeply affected by the constant attacks.

Therefore, being a deeply religious person, as well as a spiritual writer, he composed special songs-poems that are called by the Sacred Canons of Penitence to Christ, the Mother of God, the Guardian Angel. And they helped the monk go away from the negative state and come back to joy and peace.

Nowadays, believers who apply the Canons also feel a positive result regarding their inner state.
