Brief description of the Samsung Galaxy S series. Let's remember how it was

Impressive. The smartphone retained its previous look, but received a more efficient chipset, a dual and, of course, an improved camera and a more or less convenient location of the fingerprint scanner. The price tag did not disappoint either - everyone was expecting a worse scenario.

The main characteristic of the new flagship

While it is being sold for 75 thousand rubles, Samsung sets a more attractive price:

  • Samsung Galaxy S9 price- 59,990 rubles
  • the price of the older Samsung Galaxy S9 + for 64 GB - 66,990 rubles
  • buy Samsung Galaxy S9 + in the maximum configuration ( 256 GB) can be for 74,990 rubles

Even the very, most modification costs at least ten thousand less than the main rival in the top version. Hmm, generous offer ... [sarcasm] Let's see what else the South Korean flagship has to offer.

Camera

Nowadays, this is the most important function of any smartphone. And the flagship, even more so.

And the S9 + doesn't disappoint in this case. If anything, hereinafter we will consider exactly the plus-version, since the usual model turned out to be slightly neutered in terms of functionality.

The younger version has one camera module, the older version has two. If you don't need portrait photography, then you can stop at the regular S9.

On the other hand, this is, of course, a setup. The smartphone costs a lot of money, but does not offer the functionality that more affordable competitors have: the Google Pixel 2, and so on. I'm talking about blurring the background, of course.

Well, God bless him. What else can the new camera do?

The first is a variable aperture. The main 12 megapixel module received a high-aperture lens as much as f / 1.5. This is the bottom line. The upper one is darker - f / 2.4. Most likely, it is made in software bundle with the lens of the second camera, which has just such an aperture. In any case, the automation independently analyzes the lighting level and adjusts the aperture for a specific shooting scene. It sounds powerful, and knowing the capabilities of Samsung's flagship cameras, I have no doubt that it will be very cool to shoot a smartphone.

The second feature is Slow Motion video at 960 frames per second. This is very slow, so the camera captures a time span of only 0.2 seconds. In this case, the video resolution is 1280 x 720 frames. In general, now not only Sony Xperia XZ Pro can boast of such a chip (everyone somehow forgot about the ZUK Z2 at once).

Display

Samsung continues to praise its "limitless" screen. Actually, why not? The panel is really very pretty and with minimal bezels. In the new flagship, the Koreans have kept everything exactly the same as in the old one, including the pressure-sensitive area: 5.8 and 6.2 inches diagonal, resolution 2960 by 1440 pixels.

CPU

A very, very powerful processor with 8 cores, created on the basis of a 10-nanometer process technology. In the US market, an alternative will be used - Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (8 Kryo 385 cores, 2.8 GHz), which, by the way, is inferior in performance to a chipset of its own production in some tests.

Together with the new "stone", the updated graphics accelerator Mali-G72 MP18 (in America Adreno 630) was also delivered. These are very powerful graphics that will provide excellent gaming performance for years to come. By the way, MP18 means the presence of as many as 18 cores. Just in case.

Fingerprint scanner

Koreans heard users crying and moved the scanner. Well, how did you transfer it? They moved him down, under the camera's peephole. It's still far from ideal when the sensor is in front, but now it's gotten better. Although we will accidentally smear the camera lens with our finger anyway.

Bixby button

But other groans by the Korean manufacturer were ignored. The ugly and completely useless call button of the Bixby voice assistant remained intact.

Everyone, literally all users, who regularly accidentally touch this button and an actually useless assistant is launched. Unfortunately, the S9 + will be exactly the same - the interests of the company are higher than the interests of users. This is the approach.

By the way, the manufacturer reported that the assistant has become smarter, makes it easy to recognize goods in stores and provide additional tips for their purchase. In addition, food is also recognized. I took a picture of the cake, looked at 5000 calories and calmly ate it. You used to know that you ate a lot of calories, now you know the exact figure - that's all the changes.

Differences among themselves

As I promised, I'll tell you why the regular Samsung Galaxy S9 is a boring and uninteresting smartphone. Against the background of the "plus", of course.

  • the screen in the S9 is smaller than in the older device (but the dot density is higher - 568 versus 529 ppi)
  • S9 more compact
  • in the regular version there is only one camera with exactly the same shooting parameters as in the S9 +, except for the wide-angle lens
  • in the S9, the processor runs at reduced frequencies (2.7 versus 2.8 GHz on a productive cluster of Exynos M3 cores) - all for the sake of saving energy (see next paragraph)
  • battery 3,000 vs 3,500 mAh
  • RAM 4 vs 6 GB in S9 +
  • no older modification with 256 GB storage
  • of course, the youngest device is cheaper - 59,990 rubles

And one more little remark. Samsung Galaxy S9 is also known as: SM-G960F and SM-G960F / DS (dual SIM version). Look for the advanced model under the index SM-G965F.

Outcome

The device will go on sale very, very soon - already on March 16. This is true for the whole world. With the pre-order, which has already begun, you can get the smartphone even earlier - starting from March 8.

Samsung Galaxy S9 price starts at 60 thousand rubles. In the US, that's $ 720 ($ 840 for the Galaxy S9 +). Don't even translate into rubles - get upset.

If you look at the price-list as a whole, then it is, of course, unrealistically expensive. If we compare with competitors, the device turned out to be quite pleasant for the price. Especially when you consider such powerful features and functionality. However, remember that by the summer, retailers will begin to slowly drop price tags. And alternative online stores like Computeruniverse and From.ae have not been canceled.

Before moving on to discussing the smartphone, I want to apologize to our readers for such a serious delay in this material, there were objective and not very good reasons for that. Now let's get started.

There are already two materials on the site about Samsung Galaxy S, these are my thoughts about the device immediately after its announcement, as well as an expanded first look from Eldar Murtazin. From these articles, you could get a fairly complete impression of the device, so in the review I will not go into details, but rather simply describe what the Galaxy S is like in reality after several weeks of active use of the device.

Positioning

Since the announcement and after the start of sales, as well as now, when the device is (temporarily?) Out of production, its positioning has not changed in any way. This is still the top Android from Samsung, still the flagship and simply one of the most technologically advanced smartphones on this OS. As defining the positioning of things, we can note the Super Amoled screen, a processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, the presence of an integrated graphics coprocessor, and so on. The company uses in this device almost all of its latest developments, including software.

Design, body materials

My subjective impression of the majority of Samsung devices is the same - they do not evoke any emotions in me. In part, perhaps, I myself am to blame for this, on the other hand, and the company does not make any special efforts in terms of updating the design of its products, Samsung devices are often emotionless, for my taste, and are of the same type. I don't know if this is good or not for a top-end smartphone, but the Galaxy S is the top of a boring design in my opinion.

The device is made of glossy plastic, along the perimeter of the front side there is a plastic frame resembling a chrome surface. On the battery cover - plastic with a pattern. All these materials together form a “soap box”, a smartphone that feels like an inexpensive phone in the hand, another drawback in this regard is the low weight of the device. It would have weighed a little more, and the feeling of weight would have smoothed out inexpensive materials a little, but this is not.

The back surface is easily soiled, but traces and prints are almost invisible. Another thing is the rapid deterioration of the surface, many tiny scratches and scuffs remain on it, and the device, after just a couple of weeks of use, already loses its neat appearance. The solution to the problem may be to use a case or just use the smartphone very carefully. The surface of the screen is soiled, but this is a problem for all devices with large touch screens.

The smartphone is dark blue, if my vision does not change, the color. The battery cover “plays” with colors, it looks dark blue in the sun, and black when there is a lack of lighting.

The build quality is good, there are no complaints here. For two weeks of operation, nothing in the device loosened, no backlash appeared in the halves.

Dimensions (edit)

In terms of dimensions, the Galaxy S is comparable to the Apple iPhone 4 and HTC Desire, although I would even compare it to the HTC HD2, it is a little narrower, but just as tall:

  • Samsung Galaxy S- 122,4 x 64.2 x 9.9 mm, 119 g
  • HtcHD2 - 120.5 x 67 x 11mm, 157g
  • Sony Ericsson X10- 119 x 63 x 13 mm, 135 g
  • HTC Desire- 119 x 60 x 12 mm, 135 g
  • Apple iPhone 3GS- 115.5 x 58.6 x 9.3mm, 137g

Despite the fact that the dimensions of the device are large on paper, in reality, when you take it in your hand, it does not seem so big. So if we compare it with how, for example, HTC HD2 and Galaxy S feel, then the first one looks like a shovel in the hands, and the second one - just a smartphone, it is convenient to hold it, it is comfortable to speak on it for a long time. By the way, light weight also plays a role here. It is convenient to carry "escu" in the pockets of trousers, jeans, due to the small thickness of the case, it will fit even into narrow pockets.

Control elements

In terms of control, the Samsung Galaxy S is very simple - there are three keys under the screen: a context menu call, a confirmation button and a Back key, a double volume button on the left edge and a lock key (screen off) on the right. The central key under the screen is hardware, those to the left and right of it are touch-sensitive.

In general, many users, including me, at the first acquaintance with a smartphone, have the feeling that the key under the screen is also a touch panel. This feeling arises because Samsung devices often use a touchpad of this kind, and this key really resembles a touchpad. In the case of the Galaxy S, however, it's a simple button.

Personally, after communicating with devices from HTC and Acer in Samsung Galaxy S, I really missed the search button. Of course, in a smartphone, wherever it is required, there is a soft key "Search", but most "robots" are still equipped with a hardware search button, albeit a touch one.

The volume rocker in the smartphone is comfortable, there are no complaints about it. As for the screen unlock button, some users who are accustomed to the location of this key on the top end will find it inconvenient. For others, on the contrary, the arrangement of the key assembly will be familiar, so this is a matter of getting used to, and nothing more.

On the front side, in the upper part, there is an earpiece covered with a mesh. To the left of the speaker are the light sensor and the proximity sensor. On the right is the VGA camera peephole. There is no indicator light in the smartphone, none at all. This tendency of manufacturers to abandon indicators, in my opinion, is as stupid and unjustified as the abandonment of camera hardware keys. HTC at one time abandoned the camera buttons, and now it is gradually returning it. Hopefully, the same will happen with Samsung, and the hardware keys of the cameras, as well as the indicator lights in future devices, will gradually begin to appear again. In the meantime, in the Samsung Galaxy S, in order to find out if someone has called you, if there are new messages, and if the smartphone is just working at all, or if it has sat down, you need to turn on the screen.

For some users, the presence of an eyelet for a strap or lanyard will be good news. This mount is located on the left edge of the smartphone just above the volume rocker. At the top there is a microUSB connector for connecting to a PC and charging, it is closed with a sliding cap. There is also a 3.5 mm headphone and headset jack.

And everything would be fine, but the Samsung Galaxy S has one completely incomprehensible and inexplicable feature for me associated with this connector. In any modern smartphone, you can connect headphones or a headset. In both cases, you can talk on the phone while the accessory is connected. If you connect the headset, then you hear the interlocutor into it and speak also into it (into the microphone on the headset), and if you connect the headphones, then you hear the interlocutor also into the earphones, and speak into the microphone of the device itself, just bringing him to you. Both methods are logical. If you have your favorite headphones, and you want to listen to music on your smartphone through them, then why not also talk through the headphones? In Samsung Galaxy S, when you connect headphones, not a headset, during a call, you will not hear the interlocutor in the headphones, the sound will go to the speaker of the smartphone itself. Why is this restriction introduced?

The holder for the SIM-card and microSD memory card is located above the battery, so that the SIM card cannot be removed without first removing the battery. The memory card can be changed without turning off the smartphone and removing the battery, just remove the battery cover.

Screen

The device uses a touchscreen Super AMOLED display from Samsung. Screen diagonal 4 ", resolution 800x480 pixels (WVGA), the display shows up to 16 million colors. The screen has maximum viewing angles, it remains well readable in the sun even on a bright sunny day, and the display has just a huge contrast and brightness margin.

The display is of a capacitive type, multi-touch is supported, both in the main menu for displaying a matrix of screens, and in various applications: in Google maps, in a browser, when viewing pictures. The screen is covered with glass, the material can be scratched if desired, but if you accidentally touch keys and other similar objects, there will be no scratches, even if you try to scratch the surface, for example, with a simple knife.

And now I will allow myself a little subjectivity. Personally, I am convinced that screens like Super AMOLED will not take root. Not only because so far the company itself is experiencing difficulties with their mass production and because the power consumption of such displays is very high. The thing is that if an ordinary TFT screen with a good resolution and a high-quality picture is simply pleasing to the eye, and this statement is true for most users, then with Super AMOLED everything is different. There are people who like the excessive contrast of this screen and its high brightness even at its minimum level, and there are those who simply cannot get used to such characteristics of the screen. Therefore, I cannot say that the display in the Galaxy S is simply one of the best. Yes, it is one of the best in terms of its contrast, maximum level of picture clarity, but, in my opinion, the first two parameters in it are excessive, and this makes the screen controversial.

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with a 5 MP camera with autofocus. The camera eye is located on the top left of the back of the case, flush with the surface of the battery cover. If you frequently lay the device with the lid down, scratches will remain on the surface of the camera eye, so it is better to be careful in this regard.

In the viewfinder mode, two columns (left and right) on the screen display basic information, selected settings, shooting mode, current resolution and the remaining number of frames. To call additional settings, you need to click the icon at the bottom left.

The following resolutions are available for photos:

  • 2560x1920
  • 2560x1536
  • 2040x1536
  • 2048x1232
  • 1600x1200
  • 1600x960
  • and below

In the settings, you can also choose the image quality, shooting mode and other parameters.

I will not describe in detail how well or how poorly the camera shoots in the Samsung Galaxy S. Each reader can draw conclusions for himself from examples of pictures. However, I want to say this: objectively, if we compare the pictures taken with the Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire, HTC Legend, Acer Liquid E and several other fresh Android devices, "Esca" is in the lead. The pictures taken with this device are the best, of course, not perfect, but with a trivial comparison, you will see the difference. So we can say that among the "robots" the Samsung Galaxy S has one of the best photographic components. By the way, the same can be said about video recording.

Examples of pictures from the camera:

Video

Video is recorded in 3GP format (H264 codec) at 30 frames per second.

The following resolutions are available for video:

  • 1280x720
  • 720x480
  • 640x480
  • 320x240
  • 176x144

The settings in the video mode are the same as in the photo mode. You can use the zoom function while recording video. You can judge the quality of the video by the examples below.

Autonomous work

The handset uses a 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery. The manufacturer claims up to 13.5 hours of talk time (GSM) and up to 750 hours (30 days) of standby time. These data are greatly, more than twice, exaggerated.

Under standard conditions (30-40 minutes of calls per day, sending 10-15 text messages, configured Gmail and MS Exchange Server accounts with push-mail), my Samsung Galaxy S sample lasted an average of one and a half days. If we add to these functions the Internet (1-2 hours a day) and listening to music for 3-4 hours a day, then the operating time is reduced to a day. In any case, these are good indicators against the background of devices from HTC (Desire). The smartphone confidently lasts a working day and even more, it does not need to be charged in the car on the way home, it does not need to be removed from charging in the morning exactly before going to work, so that it suddenly does not turn out to be 80% charged and does not sit down in the middle of the day (this is a stone in garden of new HTC devices).

Performance

The smartphone is built on the Samsung S5PC100 platform (ARM8 Cortex), with a 1 GHz processor and a PowerVR SGX540 graphics coprocessor. Until recently, the company did not use this platform, but now a tablet from the company, the Galaxy Tab, is working on it in parallel with the Galaxy S. By the way, the Meizu M9 smartphone that I personally expected (I advise you about this device) is also built on the basis of this platform.

The device has 512 MB of RAM and 8/16 GB of memory for data storage. With regard to video playback. Even when the device was just announced and announced support for the following formats: Mpeg4, H.264, H.263, H263Sorenson, DivX / XviD, VC-1, formats: 3gp (mp4), WMV (asf), AVI (divx), MKV ( container), FLV, it was clear that the company expects to present the strongest smartphone among "robots" in terms of the "convenience of watching videos". In practice, nothing has changed, the smartphone really chews videos, TV shows and films in all common formats without any problems and plays video up to 720p without any problems.

The overall speed of the smartphone personally did not cause any complaints in my two weeks of operation, I cannot say that everything flies and whistles on it, but it was very comfortable to work on the device, just like on the HTC Desire, for example. At the same time, I can enroll myself, apparently, in the club of those lucky people who were just lucky. After all, now, when the smartphone has been on sale for a long time, it is safe to say that the Samsung Galaxy S has obvious performance problems.

I will not describe the problem and its solution called lagfix in detail, those who have encountered these difficulties already know everything. You can read about it in detail. In my case, there were no special delays, slowdowns in work.

Interfaces

The smartphone works in GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and UMTS (900/1900/2100) networks. Both high-speed data transfer standards are supported - EDGE and HSDPA. Enabling and disabling different communication modules can be done in the settings menu or using the system panel, which is pulled out from the top. This point is well thought out in the device, all interfaces are presented in this panel, and they can be turned on or off with one touch.

For synchronization with a PC and data transfer, a complete microUSB cable is used. USB 2.0 interface. When connected to a computer, you can choose one of several types of connection, including for data transfer (the memory of the microSD card and the internal memory of the smartphone is visible) or synchronization with a PC.

Built-in module Bluetooth 3.0... The following profiles are supported:

  • Audio / Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) - control music playback from a wireless headset.
  • Generic Audio / Video Distribution Profile (GAVDP)
  • Audio / Video Distribution Transport Protocol (AVDTP)
  • Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) - Bluetooth stereo audio transmission
  • Hands-Free Profile 1.5
  • Human Interface Device (HID)
  • File Transfer Profile (FTP)
  • Object Push Profile (OPP)

The sound quality when listening to music through wireless headphones is not bad.

Wi-Fi (802.11b / g /n)... The work of the Wi-Fi module did not cause any complaints. In the smartphone, you can configure the rules for switching Wi-Fi to sleep mode, use only a static IP address when connecting, and add security certificates. During Wi-Fi operation, the smartphone practically does not heat up, at least the heating is minimal and barely noticeable in comparison with the same HTC HD2, where the body heats up noticeably when the Wi-Fi module is active. In addition to supporting all modern Wi-Fi versions, the device supports DLNA protocol.

Navigation

The Samsung Galaxy S has a built-in GPS chip. A cold start takes about one and a half minutes, then it takes 10-20 seconds to search for satellites (testing was carried out using the Maverick program available in the Market). In my opinion, the satellite signal reception quality of the Galaxy S is no worse and no better than that of its closest competitors or other "robots", all these devices are at about the same level in terms of their navigation component.

There are two programs for navigation in the device. The first one is Google maps... With this application, you can plan routes (not accompanied by voice prompts), search for addresses by street names or places (restaurant, cafe, proper name of an institution, etc.). The advantage of the application over more functional navigation software is that the maps are downloaded from the Internet, and, accordingly, in theory, all major cities of the world are available to you for navigation, wherever you are. The main thing is to have access to the Internet. This is also the main disadvantage of Google Maps, without an Internet connection the application becomes inoperable. Maps of major cities are available for Russia: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Perm and others.

Second appendix - Navifon, this program is good on simple phones, where the resources of the devices do not allow using full-fledged navigation software, but on the Samsung Galaxy S its presence looks strange. Although, of course, something is better than nothing.

Entering text

The Samsung Galaxy S uses the popular Swype keyboard for typing. What it is? Swype in the world of on-screen keyboards for Android is almost the same as Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 in the world of keyboards for the blind ten-finger input method. That is, for entering text in Swype, of course, everything is there, however, in my opinion, this is far from the most convenient keyboard for Android. Especially when it comes to the layout with the Russian language, in which the letters are very narrow, and getting on them is problematic at first, it takes some getting used to.

Another disadvantage of the keyboard is the difficulty in switching languages. The latest version of Swype has a key to switch the language, and in the version that is installed on most Galaxy S, it looks like this. To switch the language, you need to click on the keyboard, on the settings button, then select the Language item and then select the required language from the list, confirm the selection - and voila, you have switched the language. Simple, isn't it? In fact, the keyboard, of course, provides for fast language switching. To do this, you need to swipe up from the information key (i) with your finger, but how do you know about this just by using your phone? I don’t know, the first pages of the Swype program’s help do not say this, you have to guess yourself, maybe.

Of the advantages of the keyboard, we can note the following. First, if you get used to Swype, you can type really quickly. Secondly, the keyboard itself has a huge number of settings, and you can fine-tune it for yourself. You can customize the placement of capital letters, and automatic insertion of spaces, accompanying clicks with sound or vibration, as well as other parameters.

Software

The smartphone runs on Android 2.1 and uses the proprietary TouchWiz shell as an interface. In this review, I will not describe in detail all the features of the interface in the Galaxy S, but I will focus on the main positive and negative points. For a start, what is good.

The smartphone has a lot of additional software. In my opinion, this is a plus. I meet people who grumble about this: "they have taught a lot of programs, and then I figure out what is needed and what is not." However, it is worth looking at from a different angle: the Galaxy S comes with a convenient book reader, a beautiful note taking application, a travel program for reading RSS news, moreover, this is one of the first Android smartphones with a preinstalled file manager, which is what I personally I sincerely wish HTC products as well. Yes, most applications are not removable, but with the amount of storage available in the Samsung Galaxy S, I don't think this is a problem.

The smartphone also has a voice recorder, a calculator with the ability to switch to engineering mode, and a few more utilities.

Now about the cons. The first drawback is incomplete localization of the dialer and interface in the address book. I often come across the fact that smartphones from HTC that I take for tests do not have a strip with Cyrillic for scrolling in the address book. However, in the case of HTC, this feature remains in the engineering and test samples, while the latest devices hit the market with the Russian language in this strip. In Galaxy S, including commercial ones, there is no Russian language on the strip for scrolling through contacts. Also, it is not in the dialer.

Second disadvantage. For some inexplicable reason, the developer decided to remove most of the standard widgets offered by the Android operating system from the smartphone. It may seem like a trifle to some, but it is not. The fact is that widgets from Samsung, in my opinion, have not developed in any way for a couple of years now, and therefore are mostly useless, widgets in Galaxy S are no exception. The main complaint about them is the impossibility of choosing the size of the widget, and most of them are either full-screen or half-screen. If in any other Android smartphone I pull the clock widget onto the screen and can drag about 10 more program icons onto the same screen, then in the Galaxy S only the proprietary clock widget will take up most of the screen. And so with all the other mini-programs.

Conclusion

During the use of the Samsung Galaxy S, I had no complaints about the quality of signal reception, or the volume of the call and call speakers. Both are loud, so you can only miss a call or not hear the interlocutor in a very noisy environment, in other situations there are no problems. The vibration alert is average in strength, and I personally missed it sometimes.

About the price. The official price tag for the Samsung Galaxy S is an average of 28,000 rubles at the beginning of October. Gray phones can be easily found for 18,000-19,000 rubles, the difference between "white" and "gray" smartphones is simply colossal. The gray Galaxy S costs the same as the gray HTC Desire, while the Samsung smartphone has a larger screen diagonal, a better camera, and a built-in memory array for storing data. HTC Desire has a more convenient shell (yes, I don’t stop to assert it), the presence of an optical trackball for navigating through the menus and slightly more compact dimensions, as well as a greater readiness of the device “out of the box” to work as a smartphone just for calls and messages, mail ...

For me, every new flagship from Samsung that I used and for which I prepared a review was controversial in its own way. This was the case with the Samsung i900 (WiTu), and the same with the Samsung i8000 (WiTu 2). However, then, with all the controversy of the devices, for me personally, I knew for sure that, in general, these smartphones are unambiguous hits, and all their disadvantages, visible to me, are mostly tasteful. In the case of Samsung Galaxy S, the situation is different - for all its advantages, the device has visible disadvantages: inexpensive body materials and general tactile sensations from working with the device, not the best keyboard for quick getting used to, incomplete localization. However, at the price for which you can buy the Galaxy S today, it is still one of the best deals among "robots", even if you have to spend a little time making friends with him.

It's been almost six months since I bought myself a Samsung Galaxy S8. And my wife. In this review, I will not burden you with technical characteristics, but will simply tell you about my impressions of the new Samsung flagship and compare it with the S6 Edge (it was also a flagship, only 3 years ago).

The smartphone is sold in a recognizable laconic black box in the style of Samsung.

It comes with a charger, a USB Type-C cable, pretty decent AKG stereo headphones. The smartphone uses a USB Type-C connector, so a USB Type-C to microUSB adapter is included. Without it, it would be problematic to charge a smartphone somewhere if you forgot your native charger at home. The USB Type-C connector is not yet widespread. A useful addition to the kit is a USB adapter for connecting external devices. A very handy thing.

Information with the main characteristics and capabilities is located on the back of the box.

Outwardly, the Samsung Galaxy S8 differs from other smartphones, including its predecessors, in that the screen occupies the entire front surface. There is no logo and buttons on the front. Just a beautiful stylish screen with rounded edges.

The S8 is similar in size to the S6, only slightly longer. It is also comfortable to hold in your hand.

The side control keys of the S8 are also similar to those of the S6.

On the back is the main camera, which does not bulge like the S6, a fingerprint scanner and a heart rate sensor

One of the main advantages of a smartphone is its screen. It is bright, with rich rich colors. And most importantly, you can customize it for yourself.

Corning Gorilla Glass 5 front and back glass panels are of course easily soiled. Fingerprints remain on them (and on which screen do they not remain?). But you can buy a cover, and there will be no problems.

The smartphone runs on Android 7.0 operating system. Everything is clear with her, I will not describe her merits.

An interesting technical solution is a combined slot in which you can install either two SIM cards, or one SIM card and an additional memory card.

Samsung Galaxy S8 is easily customizable to suit your individual needs. For example, it is convenient for me to see the clock, reminders, weather and main keys on the main screen. No problem, set it up.

Basically, almost any function, program, application can be configured as it is convenient for you.

Usually, a weak point in smartphones is the battery. But even here, the Galaxy S8 allows you to find such a compromise in power consumption so that you can comfortably use your smartphone. Disable power-consuming applications, customize the screen, disable some notifications. I manage to charge my smartphone every three days. By the way, fast or wireless charging functions are also present here.

The camera of the Samsung Galaxy S8 is great. Photos and videos are great in any light.

But I especially liked the macro feature.

And of course the photo and video modes are customizable.

My findings.

What I wrote above is only a small part of what the Samsung Galaxy S8 can do. This is my assistant, my magic wand, my friend who understands me. This is that rare case when I do not adjust to the capabilities of technology, but it adapts to me. Moreover, its appearance and materials used meet the highest requirements. A true flagship should be just that.

P.S. A year later, I decided to change it to a new leader, the Samsung Galaxy S9. It is logical that I expected even more impressive characteristics from the new flagship. But I got some disappointment. I'll tell you about this in my next review.

The editors of the site have a feeling that smartphone manufacturers are completely confused in the naming of their devices. In other words, they have forgotten how to name the models so that it is immediately clear to which class the smartphone belongs, when it was released and what it can do. And for this reason, it can be very difficult to figure out what is in front of you - a state employee or a middle-class device, a current model or something from the past.

Therefore, we decided to launch a series of materials in which we will tell you which models of certain manufacturers are included in which series, and what all this means in general. Let's start with one of the market leaders - Samsung. She's not as bad as some of the others, and yet she can't do without oddities.

Samsung Galaxy Note series smartphones

With the Galaxy Note series, everything is as simple as possible: at one point in time it includes only one actual device, which is completed with a stylus (hence, in fact, the Note - from English this word is translated as "note"). Now it is. A Galaxy Note 5 can be found if desired, and collectors should hunt for (probably named after fans who weren't disappointed with Samsung after all this fire story). This is, if anyone does not remember, restored Galaxy Note 7 with new firmware and safe battery. Galaxy Note FE is only sold in Asia.

Samsung Galaxy S series smartphones

And here everything is not so complicated: there is, there is, which is a little larger and a little more serious in terms of photo capabilities. Models, and (Edge - edge; a hint of a curved screen on the sides) are still on sale, but there is no confusion with them. The only point requiring clarification is the and models. These are devices with protection against shocks, enclosed in "off-road" cases, which is indicated by the word Active (they say, an active lifestyle). They are not officially supplied to us, so those who wish will have to order these models from the USA. Perhaps it makes sense: the same Galaxy S8 Active is the only G8 with a flat screen. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S9 Active has not yet been presented, but, most likely, it will be released sooner or later.

Samsung Galaxy A series smartphones

This series includes devices of the middle and upper-middle class. They are weaker than the representatives of the Galaxy S series, but for most consumers, the capabilities of the "ashek" are quite enough, so the series is popular and long-lived.

Now in Russian retail there are models, and. All of them are interesting to one degree or another, although the 2016 models, of course, cannot be called very relevant today.

Do you often go on business trips and do not want to overpay for communication? There is no need to buy a new SIM card with an unknown colleagues and a native number, now you can make / receive calls over Wi-Fi at the price of calls in Russia for both you and the caller.
