How to make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands? A universal assistant - a two-wheeled garden wheelbarrow. Do-it-yourself garden wheelbarrows drawing.

Wheelbarrows or carts used by gardeners and gardeners have a lightweight design and are not designed to transport loads that are too large or heavy. A do-it-yourself garden wheelbarrow can be made quite simply, even from unnecessary or improvised materials, which allows you to get a reliable and budget-friendly means of transportation.

Garden wheelbarrows: types of their advantages and disadvantages

By design, all garden wheelbarrows are a beveled metal body, equipped with a wheel or wheels, a handle and legs, which provide stability during loading and unloading.

Single wheel design

Single-wheeled equipment is intended for transporting fairly light loads, including crops, weeds and garden fertilizers.

The wheelbarrow is only suitable for use on garden paths and asphalt

Advantages and disadvantages: the model is quite affordable, easily negotiates corners and turns, but has optimal maneuverability only on flat and hard surfaces, and moving on the ground causes noticeable difficulties.

Two-wheel design

More load-bearing models, which are distinguished by better maneuverability and are currently the most popular among owners of summer cottages.

The wheelbarrow is not as maneuverable as a one-wheeled one, but it is more stable and reliable

Advantages and disadvantages: the model does not get stuck on rough terrain, has good maneuverability and does not require much effort, and is also quite stable during loading/unloading.

Three-wheel design

A three-wheeled garden wheelbarrow is very spacious and has a significant load-carrying capacity, but the production of such models is produced by a small number of manufacturers.

The design combines the advantages of one- and two-wheeled wheelbarrows, but its price is much higher

Advantages and disadvantages: the model is easy to use, extremely stable, does not require much force when moving, has good maneuverability, but the cost is higher than that of one- and two-wheeled analogues.

Trolley - four-wheeled wheelbarrow

Four-wheeled models are the so-called heavy artillery in the range of modern garden wheelbarrows. A special feature is the presence of a pair of axles, due to which the trough has maximum load-carrying capacity.

The only drawback of this product is its high cost compared to other models.

Advantages and disadvantages: the model has excellent stability, and the addition of a special tipping mechanism makes unloading much easier, but the price for such products is often very high.

Preparing to make a wheelbarrow

Of course, all of the above designs can easily be made by hand, but to obtain a durable, reliable and easy-to-use garden wheelbarrow, you need to carefully consider the choice of materials.

Which wheels to choose

The equipment of a garden wheelbarrow involves the use of plastic, cast, rubber, and pneumatic wheels with treads. The first type makes the structure light, but not too heavy-duty.

It is impossible to make a reliable car without good wheels.

One option is to purchase new wheels. The sale of such elements for wheelbarrows is now carried out by garden centers, construction markets and retail outlets. The best option is represented by solid polyurethane wheels and high-quality four-ply rubber tires.

This product is suitable for transporting light loads

The option of using wheels from bicycles and other equipment is quite acceptable. It must be remembered that cast wheels are more durable and are not able to deform even under a heavy load, and the rubber chamber filled with air has good shock absorption and a soft ride.

Body material

Factory-made structures most often have a body made of aluminum or steel. At the same time, the aluminum bowl is more durable, and the steel trough must have a zinc coating. When making a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands, a variety of materials can be used:

  • sheet metal must be galvanized or powder coated, which prevents the development of rust;
  • wood is a more affordable material in terms of price, but such a body will need to be aseptically treated and painted;
  • The plastic body is lightweight and not subject to corrosive changes, but is not resistant to mechanical damage.

The most budget option would be to use old structures in the form of half a barrel or a metal headboard for a bed. Some craftsmen make a wicker car body from willow twigs.

The body shape can be trapezoidal, with a beveled front part (this allows you to quickly and easily unload bulk contents), as well as traditional square (the cargo is placed in it more accurately).

What to make handles from

Most often, handles are made of metal with special lightweight anti-slip rubber pads. Any wooden structure can easily be equipped with a simple wooden handle, made by hand. Corrugated rubber or plastic attachments with special grooves for fingers are very convenient to use.

Corrugation on such a product must be mandatory

It must be remembered that the space between the mounted handles must be optimal for the most comfortable maneuvering and reducing the load on the hands or the musculoskeletal system. The spacing of the handles of the wheelbarrow should allow the body of a person to fit with a remaining total free distance of about a quarter of a meter.

Depending on the purpose, one transverse handle or a pair of longitudinal handles are fixed to garden wheelbarrows. Longer handles make carrying the load very comfortable and easy, but at the grip site it is necessary to provide a standard bend to prevent twisting of the wrists during operation. It should be noted that models with two handles need to be pushed, while wheelbarrows equipped with one handle can be pulled along as well as pushed.

What tools will you need?

The set of tools that you will need to use when constructing a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands directly depends on the materials of manufacture:

  • hammer;
  • tape measure, ruler and marker;
  • hacksaw for working with metal or wood;
  • screwdriver;
  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • set of wrenches.

If you need to paint or treat with special compounds, it is important to prepare brushes of different sizes in advance.

Making a wheelbarrow with your own hands: step-by-step instructions

The advantages of making a garden wheelbarrow yourself are that the size and design of such a means of transporting goods can be individual, depending on the main purpose and needs.

Manufacturing a single-wheel steel structure

A sketch of a future car is an important part of the work

A one-wheeled wheelbarrow is the easiest to manufacture and most affordable option.

Stages of making a steel model:

  1. Development of a preliminary sketch indicating the dimensions and configuration, location of handles, stops, wheelset and axle.
  2. Cutting steel sheet and cutting with a grinder.
  3. Making a bowl using a welding machine.
  4. Manufacturing and welding of a support post from a metal angle or pipe 2.5 × 2.5 cm.
  5. Wheel installation.

Handles and supports should be made of fairly thin metal tubes, which facilitate the design.

Made of wood

No less popular is the option of a wooden one-wheeled wheelbarrow.

The frame consists of two guides and a pair of cross bars

This design option is suitable for those who know how to work with wood.

The simplest model is performed in accordance with the following technology:

  1. Making a supporting frame from a pair of guides and a pair of transverse bars, which are located at an angle of 22° to each other. In the front part of the frame there are grooves for the wheel axle. Metal plates are installed on the inside to increase the strength of the structure.

    Without a metal plate, the front of the frame may be the weakest point in the entire structure.

  2. The bottom part is assembled using a planed board measuring 2.0 x 8.0 x 47.5 cm. Screws are used as fasteners, which are fixed on the guide frames.

    The required size of the bottom is formed after it is attached to the frame

  3. The cutting line is marked, after which cuts are made on both sides at the desired angle with a hand-held circular saw.

    This wheelbarrow is convenient for transportation and unloading

  4. For the manufacture of the front and rear sides, planed boards with dimensions of 2.0x0.8 cm are used. For the side sides of the wheelbarrow, planed boards with dimensions of 2.0x10.0 cm are used. The strength of the sides is ensured by fixing special elements in the corners.

    Ease of use and maneuverability of the product depends on compliance with the dimensions and angles between the elements

  5. Wheelbarrow stops are made of wooden blocks, which can significantly improve the rigidity of the body part of the structure.

    You don't have to buy a wheel for a wheelbarrow - you can make it yourself

  6. A pair of bearings is installed on both sides inside the hub of a wooden wheel, after which the axle is installed, washers are put on, and clamping is carried out using blind nuts.

    The service life of a wheelbarrow largely depends on the durability of the wood from which it is made.

The finished structure should be treated with special compounds that will protect the wood from negative external influences and extend the life of the garden cart.

Making a two-wheeled cart

The two-wheeled design is stable, does not roll, and also minimizes the load on a person’s arms and back.

Plastic is an excellent option for making a case, because it is more durable than wood and cheaper than metal.

DIY technology for making a garden wheelbarrow from an old barrel:

  1. Cut a plastic or metal barrel in half.
  2. Weld a rectangular frame from metal profiles 2.5x2.5 cm.
  3. Cut out the footrest to mount the body.
  4. Install and secure the wheels with nuts.
  5. Weld a metal profile handle with a holder onto the back of the frame.

At the final stage, a handle is formed from several shock-absorbing bushings, which are arranged in one row.

Making a three-wheeled car

Homemade three-wheeled carts are convenient and practical. The third wheel in such designs makes it easier to control the equipment and increases its load capacity. Unlike their wooden counterparts, metal carts are assembled from top to bottom.

The trolley is suitable for transporting heavy loads

Stages of making a three-wheeled cart with your own hands:

  1. Selecting or welding a steel trough.
  2. Checking the tightness of the container.
  3. Welding the frame in accordance with the dimensions of the trough.
  4. Fixation of the rear wheel pair and front guide wheel.
  5. Welding one U-shaped handle or a pair of separate handles.

It is quite possible to use a children's bicycle as a wheel base.

Making a four-wheeled car

Four-wheeled structures are usually made of metal. This allows the wheelbarrow to withstand a load of up to 90–100 kg. Assembling such a model with your own hands involves using a mechanic’s tool kit.

Steps for making a four-wheeled garden cart with your own hands:

The reliability of such a car comes at the expense of maneuverability.

  1. Carry out the necessary calculations and make a sketch.
  2. Select a container, which can be an ordinary steel trough.
  3. Weld a frame structure from rectangular metal pipes.
  4. Weld a U-shaped handle to the frame.
  5. Install the wheels at the bottom of the structure.

Garden wooden cart as a decorative element

Wooden garden wheelbarrows have recently almost completely lost their utilitarian, main purpose and moved into the category of elements for landscape decoration. In a body of this design a container decorative garden can be set up or flower pots with beautiful flowering plants can be installed.

This product will decorate the garden plot

The structures can be equipped with one, two or even four wheels. The latter option is more stable and spacious, which is why it is most often used in landscaping the local area. For manufacturing, it is recommended to use hard wood species - maple, oak, birch and elm.

The most exotic type of material that can be used to make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands is durable and environmentally friendly willow twigs.

A beautiful option for garden decoration

This unusual and very beautiful “basket on wheels” can be used to place pots of flowers or green vitamin crops.

What determines the cost of products

The average price of garden wheelbarrows and carts of different models varies significantly depending on a whole set of factors, including:

  • load capacity;
  • body volume;
  • number and type of wheels;
  • material used in production.

It is necessary to take into account the fact that the cost of garden wheelbarrows varies not only depending on the technical characteristics and equipment, but also on the reputation of the company producing the brand. Therefore, if you have the materials and tools necessary for manufacturing the structure, it is advisable to do such work yourself.

When choosing the design of a garden wheelbarrow, it is important to take into account the main characteristics of such a device and its purpose. For frequent transportation of large and heavy loads, preference should be given to the manufacture of stable and more maneuverable models, and for the infrequent movement of the lightest materials, a simple, lightweight version of a wheelbarrow can cope quite well.

All owners of personal plots are familiar with a simple device that makes life much easier - a garden wheelbarrow. It is indispensable in the garden and vegetable garden, when building a house, shed or garage. In a word, it comes to the rescue when it is necessary to transport a large volume of cargo over a short distance. Anyone who does not yet have a car, but plans to buy one, should know what types it comes in, as well as what advantages and disadvantages it has. An owner who knows how to count his money will be pleasantly surprised by the fact that you can make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands. So, we will discuss these and other questions in this article.

Types of garden wheelbarrow designs

Garden wheelbarrows have many design features, depending on which they are classified into separate types:

  • Wheelbarrows have one wheel.
  • Carts - have two or more wheels.

It is wheelbarrows that have the greatest maneuverability and reliability, as well as the minimum wheel track size. Thanks to the last factor, a garden wheelbarrow can be transported even along a narrow path between garden beds. Unloading its container is very easy - just lift its handles to a certain height and tip it in the right direction. All this cannot be said about multi-wheeled carts.

A one-wheeled wheelbarrow has one significant drawback - it is very unstable when loaded, so you will have to make an effort to maintain balance when transporting cargo. Also, the stability of the structure must be monitored during loading and unloading, otherwise it will tip over.

The advantage of two-wheeled carts is their stability. Thanks to this, they can transport heavy and bulky cargo without fear that they will tip over.

Garden carts are also classified according to the type of handle:

  • With one transverse.
  • With two longitudinal ones.

The transverse handle is much more convenient to use - you can grab it with one hand and pull the cart, but the two longitudinal handles are only suitable for pushing the load in front of you.

Wheelbarrows are classified according to the type of stops:

  • With two stationary ones.
  • With one folding one.

Stationary stops are inconvenient in practice - when moving the cart around the garden, they will cling to uneven ground.

Wheel size and shock absorption

Single-wheeled wheelbarrows create a lot of pressure on the soil and create deep ruts - this impairs their cross-country ability.

Two-wheeled wheelbarrows are optimal for soft soils - they evenly distribute the load and easily overcome all uneven surfaces.

The larger the wheels, the better. It is desirable that they be inflatable and attached to a metal rim.

Choosing a garden wheelbarrow body material

Aluminum is lightweight, does not require painting and is not afraid of corrosion. Suitable for transporting fertilizers, compost, etc.

Steel - has high strength, however, it is heavy and not resistant to rust. Suitable for transporting heavy building materials.

Making a metal wheelbarrow with your own hands

To make a wheelbarrow from metal, you will need a sheet of steel measuring 1x2 meters and 1 mm thick. Pneumatic wheels with a diameter of 35-40 mm with bearings are suitable as a chassis. The tube of the supporting axle should be tightly inserted into the latter. The wheels must be secured with a nut or cotter pin.

The volume of the cart bowl is selected depending on the needs, but most often it is 70-110 liters.

Before you start work, you need to make a preliminary sketch. It indicates the dimensions and configuration of the unfolded bowl, handles, stops and a wheel pair with an axle.

The next stage is cutting out a sheet of steel and cutting it using a grinder. A bowl is made from the obtained elements using a welding machine.

The supports of the support axis can easily be constructed from a 25x25 mm corner or a metal pipe, having previously welded a ring of the required diameter to it. The handles and supports are made of thin tubes - this will lighten the entire structure.

Homemade garden wheelbarrow made of wood

Making a garden wheelbarrow from wood is even easier - you don’t even need to make drawings for it.

Hardwoods are used for it - oak, maple, elm, birch. To create a wheelbarrow you will need the following materials - boards, beams and screws.

First you need to take the planks and assemble them in the form of a box.

The base of the wheelbarrow will be two long beams. It is to them that the car body is attached using screws. The bars act not only as the basis of the wheelbarrow, but also serve as handles on one side and a wheel holder on the other. To do this, they are pulled apart on one side and vice versa, brought together in the place where the wheel will be attached. The wheel itself can be anything - in our case it is welded from metal rods, but you can take any suitable one. Holes are drilled in the beams and an axle is inserted on which the wheel will rest.

In the place where the handles for the wheelbarrow will be, special recesses are made on the bars so that the handles fit comfortably in the hand. The final stage of work is attaching support wedges (can be metal) using bolts.

Components for wheelbarrows from improvised means

If you can’t buy a cart wheel, you can make one yourself. It can be made of wood (hardwood only) or other materials. To organize the capacity of a wheelbarrow, plastic troughs cut along the barrel, basins, etc. are suitable.

Of course, you can buy all the components in the store, but with imagination and ingenuity you can build a fairly high-quality device with your own hands from scrap materials, while saving good money.

A garden wheelbarrow is a very useful thing, because a summer resident is constantly at work. It is necessary to move fertilizers, planting materials, building materials, soil, and garbage. Moderate physical activity is, of course, beneficial, but this does not apply to heavy lifting. Having a garden wheelbarrow will make your summer life much easier and save you energy. How to make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands is described in this article.

Many people think that a cart and a wheelbarrow are the same thing. In general, they are right somewhere, but there is still a difference between them:

  1. A cart with one wheel is usually called a wheelbarrow. It is maneuverable and reliable, and its track is much narrower than that of its relative. With its help, you can transport fertilizer and mulch along narrow paths between beds in the garden and in the garden. Unloading it is easy - I pressed on 2 longitudinal handles, tilted it to the side, everything was already in the right place. What’s not really good about it is that you need to make an effort to maintain balance. If you load it heavily, then considerable strength is required. In addition, if you drive on sand or soft ground, then the only wheel that bears the entire load sinks greatly, and this makes movement difficult.

2. Actually, a cart is something more solid, because it can have from 2 to 4 wheels. The paths for its movement need to be wide. But she is stable. The design of the handle is longitudinal or transverse. Heavier materials are loaded onto it. It can withstand heavy loads well, you just need to make sure that the center of gravity does not shift.

If you decide to have this household equipment in your yard, then you should know that there are construction and garden wheelbarrows. Their designs are not fundamentally different, except that the first ones are more powerful.

DIY one-wheeled garden cart made of metal

Let's start working on creating a garden cart with a sketch:

  • Let’s designate the dimensions, indicate all the necessary dimensions, then it will be easier to select the material;
  • The primary element in a metal cart is the container. Based on its size, a frame and wheel are selected.

A one-wheeled garden wheelbarrow consists of the following parts:

  • 2 levers - 1;
  • 2 handles - 2;
  • 3 ribs. In the sketch above they are numbered 3;
  • bases - 4.5;
  • 2 overlays - 6;
  • 2 racks - 7;
  • 2 strips - 8;
  • stop - 10;
  • transverse ribs - 9, 11;
  • supports - 12;
  • trough - 13;
  • wheels - 14.

Now let's assemble the necessary tools:

  • hacksaw for metal;
  • grinder;
  • screwdriver;
  • welding inverter;
  • drill;
  • hammer.

The following materials are needed:

  • 1 mm steel sheet with an area of 2 square meters. m;
  • wheels;
  • tube that we use as an axis. It can be replaced with fittings;
  • corner for wheel axle support struts 25x25 mm;
  • thin-walled tube for handle and cargo racks with a diameter of 20 mm;
  • nuts;
  • cotter pins.

When everything is selected, we get to work.

Assembling a garden wheelbarrow

  1. Based on the finished sketch, we make markings.
  2. We cut out the blank for the body.
  3. From the resulting blanks we assemble the body using welding.
  4. Based on the dimensions of the body, we assemble the chassis:
  • we put together the base from parts 4 and 5;
  • We weld the pads to the base;
  • We attach the racks to the linings;
  • We weld 3 ribs to the base and uprights;
  • We install the body on the assembled unit and weld it to the ribs;
  • We apply the remaining rib 3 to the upper edge of the body and secure it by welding;
  • We weld levers to the lower rib, body wall and upper rib;
  • we fix the linings on the levers;
  • We weld stop 10 to the body, and support 12 to it;
  • to impart rigidity to the structure, we fix ribs 9.11;
  • We weld the strips to the base, having previously drilled holes in them;
  • insert the axle into the wheel and secure it. This completes the assembly of the garden wheelbarrow.

Barrel trolley

Your cart will cost much less if you use a metal barrel as a container. For this:

  • cut the barrel lengthwise;
  • we make a frame in the shape of the letter A;
  • We weld it to the frame of the rack;
  • fix the barrel on the base;
  • We mount a wheel in the bow.

The opposite parts serve as handles. That's it, the car is ready.

Wheels for garden wheelbarrows

Wheels for garden carts are easy to purchase, but if you have them left over from a bicycle or from a moped or motorcycle, then these are quite suitable. The best wheels are pneumatic, i.e. those that are pumped up:

  • they increase the load capacity of the wheelbarrow;
  • increase cross-country ability. The wheelbarrow will be able to walk on uneven surfaces and moves easier on soft ground.

  • they are reliable because the manufacturing plant has a strict quality system;
  • the disks of these products are made of galvanized steel and high-quality polypropylene;
  • On some models, the bearings are protected from moisture and small particles.

Let's look at an example of making a two-wheeled garden cart using a motorcycle wheel.

Two-wheeled garden carts made from waste

Collecting all sorts of unnecessary things at home, for example:

  • old metal bed;
  • motorcycle wheels lying around;
  • metal scraps.

You can make a wonderful garden cart with your own hands.

We will need:

  • separate the arms and legs from the bed;
  • metal 1 mm sheet;
  • motorcycle wheels.

The manufacturing technology is simple:

  • We make a frame from two bed legs and arms;
  • we cut out the walls and bottom of the body from a steel sheet;
  • We weld the joints of the parts using spot welding;
  • we install the container on the frame and adjust the parts to the edge of the box;
  • we bend the walls of the container to the frame and connect them with a weld;
  • Now we completely weld the joints of the container;
  • We make a wheel pair bridge using the legs from the bed. We manufacture axles and hubs;
  • we attach the axles to the pipe on both sides;
  • turn the body upside down and weld the bridge to it;
  • we make linings in the form of staples and strengthen the structure;
  • secure the wheels to the axles and return the cart to its normal position;
  • we perform the handle using bed legs and backrests;
  • choose a position for the handle that is convenient for you and weld it;
  • The support leg must be raised, otherwise it will slow down the movement.

Hardwood is also suitable as a material for a garden cart.

Wooden garden cart

To make a wooden cart you will need:

  • wooden bars 4x4 cm long 1.2-1.5 m;
  • plywood;
  • a threaded rod of 0.6-0.7 m, which can be replaced by a piece of pipe;
  • 2 wheels.

We begin the work of making a two-wheeled garden cart by constructing the frame. If there is a pipe, then you can simply bend it in the shape of the letter P. Ours is made of wood, so we knock it out of bars, maintaining a length of up to 1.5 m and a width of up to 0.7 m, and then:

  1. Drill holes in the bottom of the frame. The axle will subsequently be inserted into them. Our axis is a threaded rod or pipe. The portion of the axle protruding from the frame on either side is approximately equal to twice the width of the wheel. The axle in the frame is tightly secured with self-tapping screws or screws tightened with nuts.
  2. We put the wheels on the axle and secure them with cotter pins. They can be purchased or from a bicycle, in general, whatever you can find. If you can’t find anything, we’ll make the wheel ourselves from thick plywood. To make it last longer:
  • saturate the plywood with antiseptic or drying oil;
  • we cover the wheel with a metal strip, put on a tire or wrap it in thick rubber;
  • We insert bearings into the mounting holes of the wheels;
  • Lubricates the wheels and axle with grease.

3. It’s the body’s turn. We will also make it from plywood. First, we cut out the bottom and firmly attach the part to the frame. Options are possible with the sides. They are installed motionless in relation to the bottom of the box, or with the help of hinges and then they fold. Fastening is carried out as follows:

  • one side side directly to the bottom;
  • the second, which, on the contrary, is fastened through an adapter in the form of a bar, its thickness is equal to the thickness of the side;
  • The end bead is fastened through a transition bar of double thickness. Thus, the cart will become completely flat when folded. To prevent the sides from falling in the working position, install latches or hooks.

Trolley - decoration for the garden

The owners use this wooden cart, the photo of which was taken in the garden, as a flower pot.

As you can see, the wheel here is unusual. Let's take a closer look at its production.

Do-it-yourself prefabricated wooden wheel for a garden wheelbarrow

The assembled wheel consists of:

  • rim;
  • knitting needles;

The technology is as follows:

  1. To make the rim you will need a template on a 1:1 scale. Therefore, we mark the circle on a sheet of plywood or chipboard. Its diameter is equal to the diameter of the future wheel. The circle will be perfect if you hammer a nail in the center of the workpiece, then put a strip on it with a length equal to the radius of the wheel, and fasten a pencil on the opposite side of it. By rotating this improvised compass around the nail, we get an even circle. Let's divide it into 8 parts.
  2. Now we make the rim, for which we take wooden planks, carefully planed, in the amount of 8 pieces. Their length is slightly more than 1/8 of a circle. We saw off the ends of the bars at an angle of approximately 67 degrees. Having laid out these parts on the template, we will check how well they fit together.
  3. We mark the wheel axle and cut it out.
  4. We have to make the wheel round. To do this, we lay out the rim parts on the template. We draw a circle along their outer contour and cut out according to this marking. There will be a hexagon on the inside and a circle on the outside.
  5. We use ready-made round sticks as knitting needles. The axle, like the rim, is divided into 8 parts. We drill holes in these places.

All details are ready. We will assemble the wheel, with all connections being adhesive:

  • place the spokes at one end into the axle;
  • insert the opposite end of the spokes into the rim parts;
  • The next step is gluing the rim parts, for which we lay them out on a plane, coat the ends with glue and tie everything together with a strong rope. To prevent the product from warping, place a load on top;
  • When the glue has dried, we remove its remains and protect it with sandpaper, cover it with stain and varnish.

This video shows the process of making a wooden wheel with curly spokes:

Now that you have familiarized yourself with several options, making a garden cart with your own hands is not a problem for you. All that remains is to choose the right one. The author of this video turned it out no worse than the store-bought one:

A gardener or villager cannot manage his farm without a cart or wheelbarrow. In dacha farming, you often have to remove the garbage that has accumulated over the season. In the spring-autumn season there is the most cargo transportation; in the fall there are leaves and branches; in the spring, re-opening after winter, the garbage also comes from somewhere. In the village you always need a wheelbarrow because there is a lot of work.

Today, construction stores have a huge selection of garden wheelbarrows to suit every taste and budget. The designs of shopping carts are of course rather weak for our operating working conditions. Yes, even if the plot is large and you need a larger car. So the author thinks the same way and decided not to look for easy ways, but to make a garden wheelbarrow with his own hands. The brief principle of the cart’s operation is that the load placed in the body of the cart will put pressure on the wheel with its mass; by lifting the handles, they are also levers, we shift the weight onto the wheel and it becomes easier for us and the wheel takes on the entire mass of the load. This is shown in the picture.

But the author decided to make a two-wheeled cart, but the principle remains the same. So what does the author need to create his idea?

Materials: 30 mm boards, 16 mm pipe, two wheels, roofing iron, washers, nuts, bolts.
Tools: welding machine, drill, set of keys, hammer, hacksaw, axe.

First the diagram.

To begin with, the author sawed off a piece of pipe to size and welded the axles for the wheels.

Then I made a frame from wooden boards and blocks.

The inside of the body was lined with iron.

I screwed the pipe with the wheels to the cart bridge with staples.

Next, I screwed the handle to the cart and essentially everything was ready.

Now the author has such a wonderful cart.

There is always a lot to do in the garden plot. From time to time you have to endure something heavy, and this is not always good for your health. It is especially difficult for those who are not used to serious physical activity. To get pleasure from staying at the dacha, and not pain in the spine, you need not to carry heavy things in your hands, but transport them on a cart. A garden wheelbarrow made with your own hands from scrap materials will be an excellent helper during construction, harvesting and other work. Moreover, no special skills or materials are required for its construction. Everything you need either already exists at the dacha, or is easy to buy.

Option #1 – durable and simple wooden wheelbarrow

Garden and construction wheelbarrows can be bought in every store. But why waste money when you can do it yourself? You don’t need any drawings to build a wooden wheelbarrow: the product is simple and does not require significant material consumption. If you don’t have enough of something, you can always buy more during the process.

Advice. When constructing a garden wheelbarrow, you should give preference to hard types of wood: elm, birch, oak or maple. Such material will last a long time and will be reliable in operation. It is better not to use coniferous species.

We make a mounting frame

From planed boards we assemble a box - the basis of the product. We choose sizes based on our own physical fitness and the needs of the household. In our example, the width of the box is 46 cm and its length is 56 cm.

The box and wheel will be mounted on a mounting frame - the main supporting part of the wheelbarrow. To construct it, we will need two bars 3-5 cm thick and 120 cm long each. We will use these same bars as handles for the wheelbarrow. It is convenient to hold onto their ends to move loads around the site.

It is important to choose the right wood for a wheelbarrow: soft woods are more susceptible to rotting, are more deformed during use and, as a result, will not last long

We place the bars on the table, connecting the front ends to each other. We move the opposite ends of the bars apart to a distance the width of our own shoulders. Place a block of smaller diameter on top of the connected ends. It is shown in a different color in the photo. It needs to be outlined with a pencil, leaving parallel lines on the frame bars. This is how we mark the place where the wheel will subsequently be mounted to the bars. Using a hacksaw or a circular saw, we make cuts along the lines drawn on the bars as shown in the photo.

The wheel will also be wooden

We will also make a wheel with a diameter of 28 cm from wood. We take six well-planed boards with dimensions 30x15x2 cm. Glue them into a square as shown in the figure using PVA glue. We keep it under pressure for about a day until the glue dries completely. We mark a circle on the surface of the square. Additionally, we fasten the future wheel with wood screws. We drill out the wheel, focusing on the outer part of the marking. We process the rough surface of the rim using a rasp.

If you are making a wheelbarrow for gardening, it is better to buy a ready-made wheel (metal with a rubber tire). And if you are making a decorative wheelbarrow, then nothing will work better than wood.

Mounting the frame and wheel

Let's return to the mounting frame. We connect the two bars together using a spacer. It needs to be installed so that a wheel fits between the front ends of the bars (those that are sawn off from the inside). With a wheel width of 6 cm, the distance between the ends of the bars should be 9 cm. Based on these considerations, we determine the size of the spacer, file its ends and attach it to the bars with self-tapping screws.

To mount the wheel, we need a metal stud with a thread 150-200 mm long, 4 nuts and 4 washers. All with a diameter of 12-14 mm. At the ends of the bars we drill holes for this pin. Exactly in the middle of our wooden wheel we drill a hole that is slightly larger than the diameter of the pin.

In the same way, the body of a metal wheelbarrow is welded to its mounting frame. The basic working techniques are the same and do not depend on the material used.

We insert one end of the pin into the hole on one of the bars. We install a washer on the stud, then a nut, then a wheel, then another nut and washer. We thread the pin through the second beam. We secure the wheel on the outside of the bars with washers and nuts. The pin must be firmly secured to the bars, so we tighten the fastening with two wrenches.

All that remains is to assemble the finished product

We place a mounting frame with a wheel on the box turned upside down so that the wheel does not touch the box. Mark the position of the frame on the box with a pencil. We make two wedges the entire length of the box, 5 cm thick and 10 cm wide. We place them on the pencil lines and attach them to the surface of the box with self-tapping screws from the bottom of the product. We also attach the frame with the wheel to these wedges with self-tapping screws.

All that remains is to install a spacer that rigidly fastens the racks together. The wheelbarrow is ready, you can spray it with drying oil and use it for work

We make supports and brackets so that the wheelbarrow can be placed comfortably during loading and unloading operations. We select their length so that when installed on them, the box is parallel to the ground. A rigid connection of the racks is provided by a spacer bar attached as shown in the photo. All that remains is to cover the finished product with drying oil so that the car will serve you faithfully for many years.

A wheelbarrow made of wood serves for a long time to the delight of its owners, but even after the product fails, it does not clutter, but decorates the area as a creative flower garden

By the way, such a cart looks quite decorative and can decorate any area if it is no longer needed for work.

Option #2 – a wheelbarrow made of metal or a barrel

A universal wheelbarrow that can be used both for harvesting and for construction work must be strong. To transport cement, sand or soil, it is better to use a metal product. Making such a wheelbarrow yourself is also not difficult, but you will need skill in working with welding equipment.

An excellent option would be a cart welded from a sheet of metal 2 mm thick. Initially, the body is assembled from the sheet, after which the chassis and handles are welded to it. Depending on the expected load on the finished product, wheels from a motorcycle, moped, or even a bicycle can be used.

You can make the product cheaper if its box is made, for example, from an old iron barrel. It is better to start work by making a supporting structure in the form of the letter “A”. A light metal profile (square, pipe) is suitable for it. The bow part of the structure is equipped with a wheel, and its counter elements will be used as handles.

As a rule, such barrels are given to their owners “on occasion” and are very cheap, and a garden wheelbarrow made from this iron barrel will be light and very convenient

Half of the barrel, cut lengthwise, is fixed on the frame. Under the supporting frame you need to weld arcs or pipes, which will play the role of racks. They are needed for the wheelbarrow to gain the necessary stability during loading and unloading operations.

Now that you know how to make a garden wheelbarrow yourself, you don’t have to buy products from China in stores, which only last for a very short time.
