Feast of Peter and Fevronia history of the holiday. The story of Peter and Fevronia

  • On July 8, the Orthodox Church celebrates the day of memory of the holy princes Peter and Fevronia of Murom - the patrons of the hearth, family and fidelity. This holiday is quite young, it was founded only 10 years ago, but even it has its own customs, traditions and its own beautiful story of great and pure love.

Day of Peter and Fevronia in 2018

The story of Peter and Fevronia resembles a good fairy tale about love: the couple lived in grief and joy, wealth and poverty, and died on the same day. According to "The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom", Prince Peter fell ill with leprosy, but not a single doctor in the district could cure him of his terrible ailment.

And then the prince had a prophetic dream that the beekeeper's daughter, the peasant Fevronia, would heal. In return, the poor girl asked the prince to marry her. Healed of leprosy, Prince Peter did not keep his word and did not take Fevronia as his wife.

When the leprosy returned a second time, the prince again turned to the peasant woman for help, and when she healed him again, he took the girl as his wife and did not regret it - Fevronia and Peter ruled happily ever after and passed away on one day.

In 1547, Peter and Fevronia were canonized by the Orthodox Church, and the parishioners began to pray for family well-being and love for these Murom saints. Since then, the faithful spouses have become patrons of family well-being, mutual respect and sincere love.

Saints protect marital union, bring peace to the home, and help strengthen family ties. The memory of the miracles of Peter and Fevronia was passed down from generation to generation, and believers still pray to the saints for family happiness, pass from mouth to mouth history, how infertile couples found long-awaited children, how peace reigned in the homes of believers and how they recovered from serious ailments ...

They say that Saints Peter and Fevronia help single people find love and start a family, keep the family hearth and the loyalty of the spouses, and protect them from evil and injustice.

For the Orthodox, the Day of Remembrance of Peter and Fevronia has become an analogue of Valentine's Day, which is celebrated by Catholics on February 14. Chamomile has become a symbol of the holiday of love and fidelity - a simple, but very delicate flower. Later, on the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, a commemorative medal was issued, which is traditionally awarded to married couples, in whose homes mutual understanding and selfless love reign.

The holiday is associated with many signs, traditions and prohibitions that are observed by believers in different parts of Russia.

Holy faithful
prince PETER and princess FEVRONIA,
Murom miracle workers (+ 1227)

The holy noble prince Peter (monastic David) and the holy noble princess Fevronia (monastic Euphrosinia) are Russian Orthodox saints, Murom miracle workers.

The life story of the holy princes Peter and Fevronia is a story of fidelity, devotion and true love, capable of sacrificing for the sake of a loved one.

The love story of this married couple is described in detail by the greatest author of the 16th century, Yermolai Erasmus in Old Russian "The Tale of Peter and Fevronia" ... According to The Tale, the couple reigned in Murom in the late 12th - early 13th centuries, they lived happily and died on the same day.

Blessed Prince Peter was the second son of the Murom prince Yuri Vladimirovich. He ascended the Murom throne in 1203. Several years before this, Saint Peter fell ill with leprosy - the prince's body was covered with scabs and ulcers. No one could heal Peter from a serious illness. Enduring torment with humility, the prince surrendered himself to God in everything.

In a dreamy vision, it was revealed to the prince that he could be healed by the beekeeper's daughter, the pious maiden Fevronia, a peasant woman from the village of Laskovoy in Ryazan. Saint Peter sent his people to that village.

Fevronia, as a payment for the treatment, wished that the prince marry her after the healing. Peter promised to marry, but in his heart he was lying, since Fevronia was a commoner: "Well, how is it possible - for the prince to marry the daughter of a tree frog!"... Fevronia healed the prince, but since the daughter of the beekeeper saw Peter's cunning and pride, she ordered him to leave one scab unoiled as evidence of sin. Soon from this scab, the whole illness resumed, and the prince with shame returned to Fevronia again. Fevronia again cured Peter, and even then he married her.

Together with the young princess, Peter returns to Murom.Prince Peter fell in love with Fevronia for her piety, wisdom and kindness. The holy spouses carried love for each other through all trials.

After the death of his brother, Peter became an autocrat in the city. The boyars respected their prince, but the haughty boyar wives disliked Fevronia and, not wanting to have a peasant woman as ruler over them, taught their husbands to be unkind. The proud boyars demanded that the prince let his wife go. Saint Peter refused, and the spouses were expelled. They sailed on a boat along the Oka from their hometown. Saint Fevronia supported and consoled Saint Peter. But soon the city of Murom overtook the wrath of God, and the people demanded that the prince return with Saint Fevronia. Ambassadors arrived from Murom, begging Peter to return to reign. The boyars quarreled over power, shed blood and now again sought peace and tranquility. Peter and Fevronia with humility returned to their city and ruled happily ever after, observing all the commandments and admonitions of the Lord flawlessly, praying incessantly and giving alms to all people under their power, like a child-loving father and mother.

The holy spouses became famous for their piety and mercy. Whether they had children - oral tradition did not convey information about this. They achieved holiness not by many children, but by mutual love and keeping the holiness of marriage. This is precisely its meaning and purpose.

When old age came, they accepted monasticism with the names David and Euphrosinia and prayed to God to die for them at the same time. They bequeathed to bury themselves together in a specially prepared coffin with a thin partition in the middle. Marriage vows, even after the tonsure, remain valid for them, because they fulfill their last promise to each other - to die at the same time.

They died on the same day and hour on June 25, 1228 , each in his own cell. People considered it wicked to bury monks in one coffin and dared to break the will of the dead. Twice their bodies were carried to different temples, but twice they miraculously turned out to be nearby. So they buried the holy spouses together in one coffin near the cathedral church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. Thus, the Lord glorified not only His saints, but also once again sealed the holiness and dignity of marriage, the vows of which in this case turned out to be no lower than monastic ones.

Peter and Fevronia were canonized at a church council in 1547. Memorial Day of Saints is June 25 / July 8.

Saints Peter and Fevronia are an example of Christian marriage. Through their prayers, they bring down a heavenly blessing on those who are getting married.

The holy noble princes Peter and Fevronia are venerated by the Church as patrons of Christian marriage. It is they who should pray for the sending of peace to the family, for the strengthening of marital ties, for the achievement of family happiness. They are placed on a par with the apostles and martyrs and other great saints. And they were honored with such glorification “for the sake of courage and humility”, shown by them in keeping the commandments of God in relation to marriage. This means that each of those who ascend in a Christian marriage and follow their example can be placed in this row and can acquire the crown, which was awarded to Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom.

Their relics are in the city of Murom in the Trinity convent ... The Day of Remembrance of the Murom Wonderworkers in pre-revolutionary times was one of the main citywide holidays. On this day, a fair was held in Murom, many of the surrounding residents flocked to the city. We can rightfully say that the relics of the holy princes were a citywide shrine and the main Orthodox symbol of the city.

In Moscow is revered icon of the holy princes Peter and Fevronia with a particle of relics in the Church of the Ascension of the Lord on Bolshaya Nikitskaya("Small Ascension"), where every Sunday at 17.00 an akathist is served to them.

In 2008, with the support of his wife russian President Svetlana Medvedeva, a new holiday was established - Day of Family, Love and Fidelity , falling on July 8 - the day of remembrance of the holy noble princes Peter and Fevronia. This holiday is part of a forgotten tradition of our people. Earlier, on this day, engagement took place, and after the end of Peter's Lent, the couples got married in the church. A simple and close to everyone chamomile has become a symbol of the holiday - as a symbol of summer, warmth, comfort, purity and innocence.

A very famous holiday is Valentine's Day. Probably, there is no such person on our planet who would not have heard about him. But few people know about the Day of Family, Fidelity, Love, which is celebrated on July 8 (Slavic Valentine's Day). Let's get acquainted with the history of this holiday and its traditions, because it is part of our culture.

July 8, Family Day: the story of the holiday

Since childhood, in fairy tales, we have met a touching statement: "They lived happily ever after and died on the same day." It is borrowed from a well-known story that children learn in elementary school. The work, which has become a monument of Old Russian literature, was written in the 16th century. It was based on oral Murom legends.

The main characters in the story are Peter and Fevronia of Muromsky - the faithful spouses who have shown their main spiritual values in their lives. Their love story passed through several centuries, did not get lost among other works and was not forgotten. She laid the foundation for a bright holiday, which recently began to be celebrated in Russia on July 8 (Day of Family, Love and Fidelity).

The tale of Peter and Fevronia

The main characters, who appear in the readers' judgment in the story, are identified with the Murom prince and his wife. Peter suffered from leprosy. He could not get rid of his tormenting illness. No one was able to help him. Once the prince had a dream in which he saw that only Fevronia, a peasant woman, the daughter of a beekeeper, could cure him of a terrible disease.

Having met with a young and kind beauty, the prince told about his illness. Fevronia said that she would cure him, but in return he must marry her. The prince agreed to this condition. He was attracted not only by the cure, but also by the piety, the wisdom of the girl, her beauty. Fevronia healed Peter, and he kept his promise.

Boyars, learning about the event, condemned the prince. They demanded that he give up his wife, because she is a commoner. Peter did not take such a step, because he did not care what origin Fevronia had. Together with his wife, he left Moore and abandoned the principality. Such an attitude towards Fevronia, love for her became an eternal example. To pass on such examples of values to new generations, the holiday of July 8 was created in modern times - the Day of Peter and Fevronia, the holiday of the day of lovers.

Return to the city and the continuation of the love story

Moore did not last long without Peter and Fevronia. The outbreak of turmoil, ongoing murders and atrocities frightened the boyars. People, worried about their future fate, asked the prince to return to the city with his wife. Peter and Fevronia agreed to this.

When Peter became prince again, his marriage did not collapse. Fevronia, who arrived, was able to win the respect of the people living in this city. Her life-giving power of love was so great that the poles stuck in the ground turned into beautiful trees with her blessing. With her wisdom and kindness, she won over the townspeople. Fevronia never insulted those people who did not love her. She tried to teach her opponents a harmless lesson, to show them the mistakes made in life.

    Death unable to part

July 8 - Day of Family, Love and Fidelity - personifies eternal love. She was in the life of Peter and Fevronia. People who wanted to separate a married couple sometime could not do this. This turned out to be beyond the control of not only them, but also death. When the couple felt the end of their lives approaching, they asked God for death in one day and one hour and prepared for themselves a common coffin made of stone with a thin partition.

In old age, Peter and Fevronia went to the monasteries and convents. When the prince felt that he was dying, he sent to his wife to inform that he was waiting for her, wants to leave this world with her. As a result, Peter and Fevronia died on the same day.

After the death of the spouses, people put the bodies in different coffins. The townspeople could not fulfill the desire of the dead to be buried in one coffin, because they considered such an act incompatible with the monastic path that Peter did together with Fevronia. The bodies were left in different abodes, and the next day they were found together. People decided to make another attempt and again separated Peter and Fevronia, but in the end they did not succeed. The bodies of the spouses were again in a single coffin. For the third time, the inhabitants of Murom did not separate them. Peter and Fevronia were buried together.

The emergence of a holiday in Russia

In 1547, Peter and Fevronia were numbered among the saints of God, that is, they were canonized. The spouses began to be considered saints. The day of their memory fell on June 25 (July 8, new style). In 2001, Valentin Kachevan, who is the mayor of Murom, proposed making the 8th a holiday in July. A huge number of signatures of people were collected. All of them were sent to the State Duma.

The measures taken were not in vain. The day of the holy princes Peter and Fevronia became the All-Russian day of family happiness and conjugal love. From that moment on, July 8 is a holiday. To develop the attributes and symbols of this special day, a special organizing committee was created. It was headed by Svetlana Medvedeva, who is the wife of Dmitry Medvedev, who at that time was president.

Symbols of the Day of family, fidelity and love

The created organizing committee developed what was included in its plans. The symbol of the holiday is chamomile, which has a pair of multi-colored petals among its white petals. One petal is blue and the other red. Chamomile was approved for a reason. This flower has long been considered a symbol of love. Chamomile was used for fortune telling "loves - loves not". They were also given by young men and men to their ladies and wives as a sign of respect, attention and love.

The organizing committee also developed a medal "For Love and Loyalty" to be awarded on July 8 to those families of our country who can serve as an example for other people. On one side of the medal there is a portrait of the saints - Peter and Fevronia. The opposite side is decorated with a symbol of the holiday - a beautiful chamomile.

    Monuments to the Murom couple

In connection with the advent of the Day of Family, Love and Loyalty in Russia, monuments to Peter and Fevronia began to be erected. The first of them appeared in 2008 in Murom, where a couple in love once lived. The sculptural composition was made according to the project of Nikolai Shcherbakov under the title "Union of love - a wise marriage" and installed in front of the city registry office by July 8. The holiday on this day was covered in Murom from this very event. The following year, monuments to Peter and Fevronia appeared in Arkhangelsk, Sochi, Ulyanovsk, Yaroslavl, Abakan. Later they were erected in other localities of our country.

To date, the idea of creating a monument by July 8 has been implemented in more than 60 cities in Russia. All sculptures look different, because they were not created according to the same model. Each project has its own author, who came up with a certain image and embodied it in stone, but the meaning of all the monuments is the same - it is the personification of the family, eternal love and fidelity.

Traditions and signs of the holiday

On the Day of Saints Peter and Fevronia, it has become a good tradition to come to the monument. This is done by both couples in love and single people who dream of finding their soul mate. It is also customary for newlyweds to come to the sculpture of Peter and Fevronia and ask the saints for help in maintaining love and fidelity to each other.

Marriages on July 8 became a tradition and a sign. There is a belief that people who entered into an alliance on this day will live together for a long and happy life... Their marriage will be strong and prosperous. Years cannot destroy it.

July 8 (June 25, old style) The Church honors the memory of the holy miracle workers of Murom, the right-believing prince Peter, named in monks David, and the right-believing princess Fevronia, named among the nuns Euphrosyne. Saints Peter and Fevronia are considered the patrons of the family hearth. They also pray for marriage or the birth of a child.

Temples in honor of Saints Peter and Fevronia

In honor of Saints Peter and Fevronia, the side-altar of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in the city of Murom (1555-1557) was consecrated. There are three thrones on the top floor of the church: the main one in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, in the side-altars in the name of St. The Apostles Peter and Paul and in the name of the Monk Alexy, the man of God and Mary Magdalene; on the ground floor in the name of the Murom miracle workers - the faithful prince Peter and princess Fevronia. The main cathedral of Murom stood in the center of the Kremlin on Voevodskaya Gora. According to the historian of the church, Professor E. Golubinsky, the first temple on this site was built in the pre-Mongol period. The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin was a witness to many dramatic events in the history of ancient Murom. During the XIII-XIV centuries, together with the city, it was repeatedly subjected to Tatar devastation. The cathedral was dismantled before the Great Patriotic War.

In honor of Saints Peter and Fevronia, the side-altar of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity of the Trinity Convent in the city of Murom, Vladimir region, was consecrated. The monastery was founded in the second quarter of the 17th century by the Murom merchant Tarasiy Borisovich Tsvetnov, according to a number of local historians - on the site of the so-called "old settlement", where originally in the period of the XI-XIII centuries there was a wooden cathedral in honor of Saints Boris and Gleb, and later there was a wooden Holy Trinity Church. In 1642-1643, by the diligence of Tarasiy Tsvetnov, the Holy Trinity stone cathedral was erected on the site of the wooden church, which has survived to the present day.

In honor of Saints Peter and Fevronia, an Old Believer Church (RPC) is being built in the town of Murom, Vladimir Region.

Day of Family, Love and Fidelity

In Russian Orthodox Church a special day for the veneration of the saints was established - the day of Peter and Fevronia. In 2006, at the initiative of the city authorities, residents of Murom collected 15-20 thousand signatures under an appeal about the "All-Russian Day of Marital Love and Family Happiness (in memory of the noble princes Peter and Fevronia of Murom)", in which they called to declare July 8 an All-Russian holiday dedicated to the moral and spiritual family values. The All-Russian holiday, called the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, was first held on July 8, 2008. Due to the fact that the day of commemoration of Peter and Fevronia falls on Peter's fast, when the sacrament of marriage is not performed, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on December 25, 2012 established a second celebration in memory of the transfer of the relics, which took place in 1992. The celebration takes place on the Sunday preceding September 6 (19).

Sculptures of Saints Peter and Fevronia

In the 21st century, monuments to Peter and Fevronia appeared in many Russian cities. The sculptural compositions "Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom" began to be installed in Russian cities in 2009 as part of the national program "In the family circle", created with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia (ROC). For a long time, the spouses addressed to the Murom prince Peter and his wife Fevronia with prayers for family happiness. This day was happy for love and marriage, and after the bathing games on the previous day, couples of the betrothed were determined. According to popular beliefs, this day consists of happy marriages... From that day on, they swam without looking back, since it was believed that on this day the last mermaids leave the banks deep into the reservoirs and fall asleep. This day was also considered the day of full maturity of field and forest grasses, blossoming by this time in all their glory.
